I have a ECS laptop and the port is not a standard (232 that is)
one.it's got way more than 9 pins .anybody know how I can add an
external one , I have this Lava SPH-USB but I can't seem to find
anywhere explaining how to put the damn drivers into XP ???? I need a
standard 232 com for attaching a prgrammable scanner I have through
it...Icom R10

Connector not standard? How many pins are there? What is the shape?
You're not looking at a VGA connector are you (15 pins in a "D" shell)?
25 pins in a larger "D" shell? If it is a female connector that is a
printer port and if it is male then it is an old-fashioned RS-232 port
and you can put an adapter on it to make it look like the newer 9-pin
variety.

Typically if there are drivers provided on CD or floppy you can install
them at any time or you can (usually anyway) wait for the system to
recognize the new hardware and to ask for drivers if it doesn't already
have some of its own.
