Just installed the latest WHQL 81.85 drivers. Upon reboot, my CRT screen was
very dark & WinXP no longer correctly identifies my CRT monitor which is LG
Flatron. WinXP just says default monitor. After some fiddling, I find that
my CRT brightness setting has been set to 0. I've re-adjusted the brightness
setting & evreything seems fine except WinXP won't correctly identify my CRT
monitor. Anyone else have or had this problem? How to fix this?

Previously I was using 77.77 drivers with no problems whatsoever.

TIA

WinXP allows you to roll back to the previous drivers which is what I would
do if I were you. Don't upgrade your hardware drivers unless there is
something in the upgrade you need. If your having a problem of some sort
and the upgrade will fix it, then it makes sense to install it but otherwise
leave it alone if everything is working okay.

These problems are caused by the new Nvidia Direct Access section of the new
drivers.
To remove this problem by removing the Nvidia Direct Access, locate and
remove or rename these files:
nvmccs.dll
nvmccsrs.dll

This is the problem.
The new driver wants to control the monitor but is still resseting it.

NVIDIA Direct Access is a new feature of forceware 8x.xx that allows to
control monitor settings within the drivers control panel. Unfortunately
it's bugged and causes lots of problems to some users because every time the
driver control panel is accessed it resets the monitor configs to defaults.

For all those who have troubles with NVIDIA Direct Access resetting the
monitor config, here is a simple fix...

After installing the drivers go in Windows\System32 and delete/rename the
following files:

nvmccs.dll
nvmccsrs.dll

Then why the hell did you 'upgrade'? If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Cheers,

Utterly stupid from NVIDIA to put a feature into the drivers which isn't
even compatible with all hardware.

FWIW - Anytime I upgrade my Nvidia drivers, I have to go back and update the
monitor drivers; otherwise it defaults to generic -have a Viewsonic CRT
GS790. As for the screen blanking momentarily when accessing the Display
Properties, it happens to me too since updating the Nvidia drivers.
Sometimes it just blanks totally out and the monitor has to be turned off
and then back on; otherwise the screen stays blank. I updated to help with
problems playing F.E.A.R.
