I own a Sony DSC-S60 digital camera. It's about three months old and
gets infrequent use. I will be taking a trip next month, and I'd like to
get the settings working at optimal performance. Currently, I am not
satisfied with the picture quality of this camera: not sharp enough.

I was wondering if other Sony digital camera owners could tell me what
settings that have their cameras set on. For example: EV, Focus, Metering
Mode, White Balance, ISO, Picture Quality, REC Mode, Flash Level, P. Effect.

I have tinkered relentlessly with these settings, but cannot seem to get
the picture quality I want. Most annoying is that inanimate objects like
tables, buildings and cars photograph reasonably well, but people always
seem to come out fuzzy.

I forgot to add that the image size is set at 1MP. I have boosted it
up to 3MP, but that didn't help.

post a few "satisfactory" and "unsatisfactory" pictures on a web site,
and publish the link here - let the experts take a look and give you
their thoughts. Whatever you do, do NOT make any changes to the image
fles you get from the camera when you post them on the web site -
leave them at 3 megapixels.

First, as others have said, use your maximum picture quality, 2304 x 1728
pixels and Fine Quality for this camera. If possible, turn off the digital
zoom--optical zoom is OK but avoid digital.

I use other Sonys but haven't used (or read the manual for) the S60. If
the major problem is fuzziness, it's either a focus issue or less likely, a
shutter speed issue. Do you use manual or auto focus? If manual, is it
correct for the subject's distance? If auto, is this a camera that requires
a half-press of the shutter, a wait for the auto focus to be complete, then
a final press of the shutter to take the image? If auto, are you letting the
camera complete its focus before shooting? The other focus issue would be if
the people are not in the camera's focus zone and the camera is focusing on
the back or foreground instead of the person. This can really be a problem
when taking an image of two people where the focus zone in the center sets
itself for the distant background rather than the people to the left and
right of center. I suppose there's a final focus issue which is shooting a
subject too close to the camera although it appears that auto focus can go
down to 50cm for this camera so I can't imagine this to be a problem for pix
of people. If a shutter speed issue, be sure to hold the camera still, have
the subjects stand still and if really needed, increase the ISO (although
higher ISO settings will degrade the image in directions other than focus).

As others have said, too, letting us see some images of your good and bad
is your best option for getting correct advice.

EV, Metering mode, white balance, etc. can cause too bright or too dark
images, off colored images, etc. but aren't related to your fuzziness issue.
Overall a 0 EV, auto white balance, auto-focus, normal flash etc. will give
you adequate images with a minimum of tinkering.

I see from a web review that the S60 is a 4 MP camera and is highly
regarding for its price so you should get great pictures from it.

PS--taking digital images is cheap compared to film! Practicing with the
camera and viewing the resulting images on your PC to get your technique and
other things right before taking your trip is highly recommended.
