Hello,

I am preparing for the refilling tanks in my
iP4000 for the first time ever. I've never done it
before. I am considering buying Media Street bulk inks
from inkjetgoodies.com and I am still undecided on what
refill kit, tools and/or accessories will be best to
purchase. What I find surprising is the large degree of
variation between different refill instructions:

MIS instructions call for injecting lots of ink
directly into the sponge through the breather port,
followed by filling of the reservoir:
http://www.inksupply.com/instructions/ipixma.doc

Inktec instructions say to inject 2 ml into
the sponge through ink exit port followed by
filling of the reservoir:
http://inktec.us/movie/bki-6031C-300-eng.wmv
(It would seem that this procedure inevitably
would puncture sponge in the outlet port and that
should eventually lead to uneven flow of inks(?))

alotofthings.com instructions tell to simply
inject ink into the chamber through fill port:
http://www.alotofthings.com/supportforrefillers/CanonBCI-3BCI-6refillbyinstructions.html
(Unlike others, these instructions call for sealing
the vent hole during the refill procedure?)

Questions:

1. Could you please describe the refill procedure
that works best for you with OEM cartridges?
2. Do you find that aftermarket cartridges work better
for repeated refill purposes? If yes, what manufacturer?
3. What seals/plugs do you use? Where did you buy them?

Thank you,

Seth

Well, that's exact same URL that was in my original message!
Of course I read it.

I am trying to understand why different instructions
differ so much between them, the relative importance of
the various factors involved in the refill process, and
what way of doing it is truly "the best".

I will use nothing but Formulabs ink and the kits from :
http://www.alotofthings.com/ The tanks they sell are WAY easy to use and
come with a clip to hold the tank while you refill.

Very good instructions there too. And excellent support/service.

Go with the refill kit. Your spending about $5.00 a piece for things
with holes and plugs and the proper clip at the bottom so the ink
doesn't leak out. Perhaps after you have experence you can then refill
the OEM tanks, but until then going with training wheels so to speak is
*highly* reccomended.

Refilling the bci tanks depends on being able to seal the outlet hole,
otherwise as you add ink, they will leak. Unless you kept the outlet
caps from your old ones you'll have to get something.

My experence is with the mis kit from inksupply.com. The kit is
minimal, the blunt needles short, and the rubber plugs difficult to
remove with gloves on. But it does the trick. The ink from
inkjetgoodies.com is believed to be the same stuff by "image
specalists".

I have a couple of tips for the BCI-6:

1. Don't allow the sponge to dry out. Always refill when the chamber
empties.

2. Air is bad, don't let the cart sit out in the air while refilling to
long. Refill it quickly and put it back in the machine.

3. Always use Canon carts, refill them 4-8 times and then buy new Canon
carts. It's a little more expensive but at least you know the carts are up
to standards. Also virgin carts are expensive and one leaking cart can ruin
your printhead.

4. I recommend the bulk ink from alotofthings it's formulabs and very close
to Canon OEM.

Do you mind telling what exactly refill method of OEMs do you use?
E.g., do you inject into the sponge and if yes, from which side?
Or do you only inject into empty tank space and that's good enough?
What plug(s) do you use and where did you buy them?
Do you need to seal breather port during refill or not?

Yes, everything I read suggests that, apart from the very
expensive InkTec inks, Formulalabs inks are the next best
thing after OEM. Also, MIS/Media Street/Image Specialists
are apparently all the same and about as good.

What I have not seen discussed at all is comparison of the
quality of the *pigmented black* from different suppliers
vs OEM. Any ideas?

I've always been puzzled why there is such confusion regarding the refilling
of Canon BCI-3/6 ink tanks. Nothing could be easier and less messy despite
the lies and misinformation the mindless troll constantly spews. I've been
refilling Canon tanks since 2000 and here are the important points.
1.- All of the special procedures mentioned in the various refilling
instructions make the process appear way too complicated.
2.- Refilling with any of the inks recommended on this forum by
experienced users will not in any way harm your printer or cause clogs.
3.- Any tank can be refilled - OEM or third party.
4.- Refilling is essentially nothing more than adding more ink to the
reservoir side of the tank.

Q: What procedure do I use to refill?
A: I've used several different procedures, but two things must be observed
as part of the refilling process. The first is to cap off the bottom ink
outlet (use the original caps or a piece of duct tape) prior to making an
opening for the syringe and the second is to insure that a 100% seal is made
to the opening for the syringe once the refill is complete. These steps are
necessary to prevent leakage. The refilling process can be as simple as
poking or drilling a small hole in the upper side of the ink reservoir for
the syringe and then covering that hole with duct tape. Many refillers worry
and fret about the sealing plugs on top of the cartridges. Some are
removable and if you so desire can be reused, but because I do a lot of
refilling I use a different procedure. When the first refill of a tank in
needed, I remove the plug from the fill hole and with a drill enlarge it
enough so that I can cut threads with a 10-32 tap. I then use a 10-32 nylon
screw to seal the hole. For subsequent refills all I have to do is cap off
the bottom outlet and remove the nylon screw. If you don't plan to reinstall
the refilled tanks at this time, i.e. you have a couple of sets you keep in
rotation, be sure to use a piece of tape to cover the vent over the sponge
in order to prevent too much air from affecting the sponge. Be sure to
remove this piece of tape before installing the refilled tank, just as you
would with a new cartridge.

Q: What are the Do Not items to be aware of?
A: Don't cover the vent hole over the sponge during refilling. Do this after
the ink has had a chance to be absorbed by the sponge material. Don't inject
ink directly into the sponge either from the vent hole on top or from the
ink outlet on bottom. Inject ink into the reservoir only.

There are no special tools required for refilling BCI-3/6 tanks. Media
Street inks are a good ink, but the cost is quite high in relation to other
refill inks. MIS and Image Specialists inks from Weink are quite good and
have enthusiastic supporters. I have two favorites and both are excellent.
They also cost less than the other inks. The first is Formulabs bulk ink
from www.alotofthings.com. I've used this ink for years and have never had
any problems. The second (and my favorite) is Hobbicolors from
www.hobbicolors.com or ebay search = hobbicolors. I prefer Hobbicolors ink
for three reasons: First, great customer service (but that also applies to
alotofthings.com), second, the ink has a slightly better color gamut than
any other ink I've tested - including Canon OEM and third, the price is very
reasonable. In your case as a new refiller they also offer another
advantage. Their refill kit comes with a blank cartridge for each color and
nylon screws are used for sealing the refill hole. A syringe with blunt tip
needle is also included with each kit. Take a look at their web site for a
better description of the refill kit. I've also made a bulk refilling setup
as an alternative to the conventional way of refilling. If you want to see a
picture and description of the setup go to the Nifty-Stuff forum site
(referred to by the troll as Da Church)
