Strange, but true.
I'm looking for opinions here.
I have a Dell Dimension 8250 PC in my office (provided by the college IT
Services).
I have a new responsibility that requires me to burn DVD's, so to avoid the
bureaucratic hassle and wait to obtain a DVDR "through" channels, I bought a
Lite-On and installed it. It worked OK for about a week, then the DVD laser
ceased to function (drive could only read/write CD?CDR).
OK, bad drive, so I installed a second spare I had at home (NEC). I could do
DVD+-R again.
After a few burns, this second drive has the *same* failure as the first!
I have two possible theories:
1. Inadequate, cheap, PSU is over stressed by the addition of the burner and
current fluctuations are killing the drives?
2. Inadequate airflow (burner in top 5.25.bay over DVD reader in lower bay)
is causing the burners to overheat?

Before I try installing a third drive as the only 5.25 device (hopefully
mitigating any heat problems, does anybody have additional possible causes,
or wish to support the PSU as the culprit?

I know the drives are cheap, but I need to get one to work :(

TIA for any thoughts on this.

You could try an external burner, assuming your Dell has USB2 or Firewire
(preferred)

Plus you can move the external from machine to machine. Make sure it

supplies it's own power though.
