Acer Aspire - Wireless Probs |
|
|
Hi,
I have an Acer Aspire 1520WLMi notebook, but I'm having trouble with the
wireless networking. If I try to use encryption (WEP or WPA) the
connection keeps disconnecting every second or so. I can see the
connection speed flick between 54mbps and 1mbps continuously, and the
connection is pretty much useless. If I disable encryption then the
connection stays stable.
I've tried updating the drivers to the latest version, and I've also
tried connecting to different access points, all without success.
Does anyone have any ideas I could try, or does it sound like the
wireless card is broke? If the latter, are they parts that can be replaced?
Many thanks for any advice. If there's a more suitable group for this
question, please let me know.
Regards,
Bob |

What wireless card is installed? Broadcast SSID if not doing so
already. Is the WEP key correct? Remove all except your network from
Preferred networks. You might Google for winsockxpfix.exe that will
repair a broken TCP/IP stack (if you can connect without security, then
this is unlikely). |

Hi Q, |
Thanks for the reply.
The card is listed in Device Manager as Inprocomm IPN2220 Wireless Lan
card. For info, the SSID is being broadcast and the WEP key is correct
(I've set it to a very simple key to test the problem) Also, I only have
the one network in the list. I suspect the TCP/IP stack is ok, like you
said everything works without encryption enabled. I think I'll just buy
a new PCMCIA adapter, it just seems a waste....Still, after having
dealings with Acer repair centre, I won't buy Acer again!!
Thanks again for the advice

Can you say a bit more about your opinion on the laptop and the
manufacturer. I'm planning to buy an Acer soon and I would like to know
if I'm making a mistake.

Thought the spec was excellent for the price so made a purchase.
However, fan is very noisy and the bottom gets very hot (result of
dedicated graphics I suspect!) Mobo packed in after 3 months, sent it
back for repair and it was returned to me with a scratched case and a
loose screw inside. As you'll have read, the wireless functionality
seems a bit suspect too and it looks like I'll have to buy a PCMCIA adapter.
So, in summary, the machine would be great if it did all it should and I
hadn't had dealings with the repair centre. I probably wouldn't buy one
again.

Thanks for your answers. I browsed some sites and I found a few similar
opinions. Although Acer is rather cheap for the specs, I decided to
invest a little more a buy Toshiba Tecra S3. :)

Re: Acer Aspire - Wireless Probs |

My personal experience is that the reliability service is terrible. I
have had one machine, after multiple attempts they failed to fix it.
Sent me a new laptop as replacement, which has also failed. I sent it
to the repair centre at the beginning of October, UPS delivered it, and
they have no further record of it at all. Lost /stolen inside their
base? Who knows. All I know is about 1 month later they cannot find
it, let alone start to repair it. Based on prevoius experience I will
be lucky to see it again at all this side of Chrismas, and then it
probably won't be fixed. All I get from the Customer Service is "don't
call us we'll call you".
Based on my experience I would not buy from them agan (and I haven't)!
Your choice of course.

Thanks again for the answer Q I appreciate you taking the time to
assist. I'm using WZC as the laptop didn't come with any management app.
Are these normally better or worse to use? 802.11x auth is disabled, and
I updated the driver to the latest version I could find in Acer's website.
Definitely seems like a lost cause, don't you think??

It's neither better nor worse; it's one or the other. Two wireless
managers will conflict. Check the router for a setting "short preamble"
and disable it. There might not even be such a setting. Is the onboard
ethernet NIC disabled? Google for the application winsockxpfix.exe and
run it to repair a corrupted TCP/IP stack. Disable the Windows firewall
temporarily. In the TCP/IP properties, Advanced button, Options tab,
TCP/IP filtering properties button, make sure that Filtering is set to
Permit All and then disable filtering. Also, uncheck the setting notify
about no connection, etc.
Your cell phone or portable phone is not sitting next to the computer?
PDA with wireless also?

OMG, I don't believe what a dummy I am. While checking the settings you
pointed me to, I noticed that 802.11x was ticked (haven't a clue why as
I don't ever remember using it!)
Anyway, seem to be connected ok with WPA enabled. Incidentally, what's
the difference between AES and TKIP encryption and which is best?
Many thanks for your time

You Linus distro does not have a driver for the chipset in the card.
Plain and simple. If you can identify the chipset, you might be able to
install a driver using that chipset. Otherwise, you have a slight
chance of getting it installed using NDIS Wrapper, if that has been
customized for the chipset.
The Linux hacks deny that there is a generic problem with wireless
support. The answer is to buy a card that is supported.

But shouldn't the device be recognized first as exisiting but needing |

There's no way to know if a device is on a certain i/o port or interrupt
except by probing and seeing if it responds to something, on many buses
(e.g. isa, ps2, etc.). On other buses (pci, usb, etc.), devices do
register themselves and one can interrogate the bus controller for their
vital id numbers (always assuming you have a driver for the controller
in question). But the id number will do you no good if it is something
just dreamed up by the factory - nobody will have a driver for it until
6 months or a year later, roughly, when it might have been reverse
engineered or the manufacturers might have tried their hand at doing a
driver.
