I have a real basic question. I burned several files as I moved data
from one computer to a new one. How do I transfer the data files from
the CD to my hard drive? Will they actually work without being install
from a disc?

It is not clear from your post *how* you burned them. Assuming
you used something like Nero or Adaptec, then the files should
just be on the CD like any other files and you can copy them back
to the other hard disk. Be aware of the trap door you can drop
through -- by definition, when you write files to a CD, they are
read-only. When you copy them back, unless you change their
properties, they are still read-only.

Open Windows Explorer. Select (click) the CD drive. Select (click) a
file or folder you want to copy to a hard disk folder. Then CTRL+C
(press and hold Control key and then press C key for Copy). Select
(click) the hard disk folder you want the file or folder to copy to.
Then CTRL+V (press and hold Control key and then press V key for Paste).

1. Many data files will work on the CD-ROM. However, some programs
(e.g., Word, Access) will try to open the file for writing or to write a
temporary file to the same path as the file you are opening; those
require you to have the folder writable, which won't be true on a
mastered disc.

2. Assuming you're on a PC running Windows, you can simply open
Explorer, browse to your CD-ROM and the file you want, and send it with
a right-click to your desktop. In some cases (and except in XP), you may
have to remove its read-only attribute to open the file.
