Where to readily find older notebook specs? |
|
|
Is there a Web site that lists "OLDER" PC notebooks by screen size,
processor speed, dimensions, etc...?
I'm looking for a used notebook, one that has an 8-12" screen (but up to
14" might be considered if the PC is exactly what I want) with parallel
& serial built in (prefer not to need a docking station), modem, (PCMCIA
& USB are OK but not necessary), probably over 350Mhz P3 (to operate
most older and some newer software), CD & floppy need not be built in as
external ones are readily avail. Basically a medium wt. to replace a
Libretto 50CT.
Just looking to run Win 95 and DOS 6.22, maybe Linux (partitioned drive)
and have found the newer models won't run the old operating systems if
they were designed for XP (my Dell 8300 XP PC won't recognize my Win 95
HD). I have WinXP Pro if I need to load it later. Looking on EBay will
take forever on dialup service, thousands of PC to choose from. If I had
the specs before hand I could quickly narrow the search for the ideal
book.
Any suggestions on what notebooks to look at?
Thanx, Gus |

Your description of what you are looking for sounds pretty much like my IBM
Thinkpad 600 which is a 300 Mhz or my son's 600X which is a 500 Mhz. For
starters you could go on eBay and enter Thinkpad 600 as your search
criteria. You'll still get lots of hits but it should help to narrow the
list down a bit. Even if you just entered Thinkpad as your search you will
get a pretty good starting list that might give you ideas of what you want
to look for. Just for the record, I got my 600 on eBay with all the
accessories, CD's, manuals, case, etc. for $96.00USD plus shipping so there
are some really good deals out there.
Cheers,
Lawrence |

IBM THINKPAD T23 with everything included. Less than $400. One of the
few I'm considering. Figured IBM and Dell would be the most popular
ones. It's much larger than what I used and not what I'd prefer but a
replicator is not needed so there is less to carry and add on.
Any preferrence as to where one buys a new battery? I know who to trust
for nicads and nimh AA's for my radio gear but never needed to look for
laptop batteries.

Hi Peter, anyone can chime in, anytime :) But the Libretto isn't 4 sale,
it's my main DOS PC, slow even overclocked & no modem but it serves a
purpose. I do see a 50CT for sale on eBay. As for any Libretto related
goodies, do check out the http://libretto.basiclink.com/archive/ (the
URL is not working at the moment though) and consider becoming a member
on the board. Many Libretto owners, lots of parts, great knowledge base!
Also http://www.silverace.com/libretto/librettocontent.html for tons of
info on the Libretto series.

I just read the second portion of your post a bit better, Gus. If this is |
what you want, check out any of the Armada 4100 series.
The 4160 (I used to have one and I LOVED it until I got my new Vaio) runns
at 166MHz (MMX) and was built for Win95/98. I spoke earlier of my love of
the Armada series due to its modular design. Also, it doesn't have a noisy
fan, but instead uses a "radiator" that runs along the back of the unit to
cool the chip. It has two batteries, one flat one as is customary on a
laptop, and another that doubles as a carrying handle.
http://www.morochove.com/watch/cw/ff60620.htm
http://www.byte.com/art/9610/sec12/art11.htm
The 4220 runs at 266 MHz. Other Armadas you might want to consider are
M700 (500MHz, Win98)
http://www.digit-life.com/articles/compaqarmadam700/
And since I LOVE to shop and you are on dialup, I'll do some of the work fer
ya:
This is a sweet Toshiba Portege 3020CT, 2.2 pounds, 300MHz, 96MB RAM, lots
of goodies, including a laptop case, external CD-ROM drive. No bids yet,
bidding starts at a dollar, and auction ends in six days. (Hey, if you don't
jump on this one, I just might!)

Compaq Armada 3500 (350 MHz) on e-Bay, free shipping, ends in 18 hours,
bidding at $71 now:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Deluxe-Compaq-Armada-3500-Complete-Laptop-WiFi-DVD-NR_W0QQitemZ6818809501QQcategoryZ3711QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

If you want a replacement Libretto, here's a 50CT with lots of accessories,
auction ends in 6 days, no bids, no reserve, opening bid is 99 cents.
http://cgi.ebay.com/Toshiba-Libretto-50CT-mini-laptop-notebook-acc-lot_W0QQitemZ6818901872QQcategoryZ42206QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Gateway Solo with Laptop case, Office 2000, Win98 (150MHz, but big 2 GB hard
drive), no reserve, no bidders, bidding starts at 99 cents, auction ends in
6 days. It has a 33K modem, but 56K PC card modems are a dime a dozen on
e-Bay.

And last but not least, don't know if you're interested in a tablet PC (they
are a special breed unto themselves), but this is a nice little Fujitsu 3400
Tablet PC with car charger, etc. Extremely portable. Undisclosed reserve,
one bidder at 99 cents. Auction ends in 6 days.

Be careful of getting something too old because usually in order to be able |
to run thsoe external drives, you need USB support and some of the older
lappies don't come with them. I HAVE seen some PC card USB ports on e-Bay
however, so all isn't lost. In other words, you'll likely need and want
USB. Most all laptops have PCMCIA slots, but the older ones won't have
Cardbus (32 bit).
I used to be partial to the old Compaq Armada line - it was their business
line of laptops and thus more durable and they were also modular, so you had
options as far as whether you wanted to attach the CD-ROM unit or not, to
lighten the load a bit.
I don't know how much you are willing to spend, but I recently bought my
husband a used Sony Vaio FX310 (he's not laying a finger on my new Vaio
lappy!) with DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive, two USB ports, a bright 14-inch
screen, running Windows XP, 900MHZ with 384 MB RAM, in flawless condition,
on eBay in September for $389 plus S&H. It runs Links 2003 (a notorious
resource hog) with ease. And that's really all he wants it for, plus it's
hooked into our home network so he has broadband access and access to our
desktop's huge collection of music.

I have a suspicion that sound may be a problem
in Linux too.
The internal modem is a Winmodem. (I am
embarrassed even just to type out the word.)

Outstanding reply! You did some work researching the laptops, it wasn't
necessary but thankx! Getting a barn burner wasn't a requirement but a
P3 was, it will run the majority of app's out there, at least those I
might use. My desktop is a P4 2.4Mhz or whatever, I haven't used it in 8
months prefer win95. Since I have a 25 & 100Mhz laptops I wasn't going
to buy yet another slower one. The Libretto 50CT works great with my DOS
programs. I bought a used Dell C610 P3 1Ghz, plenty of pwr for my use,
even included the OS and disk, book, license.
I found one PC mag site that had a page of all its reviews of PC's, it
might be this one (I looked at so many but didn't bookmark them)
http://www.pcmag.com/category2/0,1874,9,00.asp. PCWorld also has
reviews, just can't find the pg that had "old" notebook reviews on it.

Yrs back I had a program that ran in DOS which allowed individual video
& audio files to play. All I see on my current HD is Go32.exe in the
directory that at one time had the program. I'm sure if I search all my
CD's and floppies I'll find it. Anyone recall the name of the program
that allowed DOS to play video files (it may be Go32.exe)? I think it
was written by a college student. Browsing this site for clues
