Toshiba Tecra Function Keys - Locked? |
|
|
Hi all
I have a Toshiba laptop on which the function keys F1 to F9 do not appear to
operate.
These control such things as screen contrast and brightness.
Does anyone know of a key combination that will lock these or is this a
hardware fault?
TIA

The usual format for the hardware function keys is the combination of
the Fn key and the Fx key. Bright would be Fn-F5, for example.
Some vendors (HP, Sony that I know of) load a software interface app on
startup that operates the functions using the same two-key combination.

Yes I'm sure that's what I was trying |

Not sure I understand this bit!
Do you mean that the user has a systray icon or similar to launch a mini-app
to present a GUI which in turn controls the brightness etc through software
calls to these keys?
Not sure if the Tecra has such a thing, but will investigate if you think it
is likely.
Trouble is that the guys who use these are away most of the time and the
repair time is quoted as 30 days!. Lucky if they are back in the office for
a full week!

Yep, you need to install the Toshiba program.
Because you think it's top secret to tell anyone which model you have I
can't help further.

Phil I can only offer suggestions since I do not own a PC that uses the
F1, F9 keys for what you described. I have an ancient Librex V386SXL
whereby you hold down the CTRL key and ALT keys and then press the / key
to change the CPU speed from 25 to 8 Mhz (I told you it was an oldie!)
You can change the screen contrast via the CTRL, ALT and , keys.
But it also came w/a program that allows you to make these and other
changes at the DOS prompt or via a batch file (in 1992 that was OK for
most of us along with LIST.exe). You probably have a program that allows
you to do the same in Windoze. On my Toshiba Libretto you use the FN key
with other keys to obtain results.
A quick search on the Net found this article: "The Fn-lock and Num-Lock
work and the internal/external/both display control (Fn-F5) seems to
work. The Fn-Esc (Sound vol), Fn-F1 (padlock), Fn-F2 (lightbulb), Fn-F3
(suspend to memory), Fn-F4 (suspend to disc), Fn-F6 and Fn-F7
(brightness) all seem to do nothing at all.
And this: On the Tecra M2, you can do this by holding down the Fn key
(lower right on your keyboard), and hitting a couple of the Function
keys on the top of the keyboard to do what you are describing. For
example;
Fn + F9 Will Disable or Enable the Touchpad/Accupoint II device
Fn + F11 Will turn the numeric overlay on and off
You can try the ALT, CTRL, SHIFT keys in combos or separately. Good
luck.
