One of the early Canon BC-4xxx series ... the twin black/color cartridge can
be changed for one single black cartridge. Parallel port only!

acceptable.
But I understand that most (or all) color ink jet printers won't function
if a cartridge is missing.
Anyone every heard of either such printer?

It may be possible, but the results would not likely be very good. The DeskJet
722 is about 10 years old at this point and was never designed to be a photo
printer. It would take some experimentation to get suitable dye load levels in
the various chambers. Some driver tweaking would be required, it would
probably be easier to just use the photo editing program to balance your color.
You would likely have much better B&W results with any of the recent DeskJet
or Photosmart printers that support the #59 or #100/#102 grayscale cartridges.
These printers are designed for photo printing, and the grayscale cartridge
give excellent B&W prints. See the Photosmart 8050 at

Read what Bob Headrick has said but please follow Measekite who has given you
good advice. It is essential that you choose the right printer, if you buy just
any HP printer you may not get one that will print without a

Measekite's message suggests that any HP printer will do and that is
correct in common with most of his posts.

| HP DeskJet and PhotoSmart printers that use the number 56, 92, 94, or 96 (or
| the equivalent regionalized) black cartridges can operate with only the black
| cartridge installed (and an empty space for the color cartridge).
That is what I want to do ... not have a color cartridge at all (as opposed
to having one and letting it run empty that Mister Uppity Caps suggested).
| Specifically, I know the following support this feature:
|
| DeskJet 450, 3930, 3940, 3840, 5150, 5440, 5550, 5650, 5740, 5940, 6500 series,
| 6620, 6800 series, 9800 series
|
| Photosmart 7150, 7350, 7550, 8150, 8450, 8750
I'll write these down and go shopping again. Previous shopping attempts
found only clueless sales people in various stores.
My printing use will only be occaisional, but will probably involve
200 to 500 pages in the few days it does get used. Any special advice
for that kind of usage?
|
HERE IS WHY YOU ARE A DUMB SHIT. YOU NEED A MONOCHROME LASER PRINTER
| Quote: |
| In the documentation this is referred to as "reserve mode". Most of the
| all-in-one and PSC units that use the above cartridges will also print or
| receive faxes in reserve mode but will not copy or send faxes in reserve mode.
That seems a bit strange. I could understand maybe the copying ability
being compromised in reserve mode, but the sending of faxes I'd think
should be doable even if there is no cartdrige at all (and no blank paper
to print anything on).
Fortunately, I have no need of any fax features. I've only needed to
receive and send a fax once since 1993 and I did that through Kinkos.
| The printers that use individual ink tanks such as the Business Inkjet models
| or the models that use the #15 or 45 cartridges do not support reserve mode.

At that usage for an inkjet I would look at the DeskJet 6540, see
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF05a/18972-236251-236261-14438-f51-357210.html
Depending on your usage you may also be interested in the DeskJet 6540dt (with
duplexer for automatic two-sided printing) or one of the 6840 versions
(networking with or without duplexing). See
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF02a/18972-236251-236261.html
BTW, the DeskJet printer will come with both black and color cartridges
included. You do not need to install the color cartridge.
How often will you print 200-500 pages per day? If more than a few times a
month a low end laser might be a better choice.
I HAVE ALREADY SAID THAT BUT THIS GUYS SEEMS TO BE A PERFECT CANDIDATE |

Draft mode would probably be acceptable for most uses, on the DeskJet's draft

Armed with your list I browsed the HP printerlineup and indeed that
model looked like a good match.

I decided that my two-side printing is sufficiently rare that I don't
need the "dt" version.
| BTW, the DeskJet printer will come with both black and color cartridges
| included. You do not need to install the color cartridge.
I was looking at them at one of the retail stores (Staples) the day
before the post and noted that every model of ink jet printed was
listed as being sold _without_ any ink cartridges. I just assumed
this was a practice to make printer prices seem as low as possible,
while the real profits (as we know) are made in selling the ink.
| How often will you print 200-500 pages per day? If more than a few times a

Draft mode would be to check formatting before making a final copy.
Almost all the printing would be for ultimate purposes of mailing the
printed copy to someone. I would expect to make use of draft mode
perhaps 20% to 40% of the time.

I was at an office supply store a few days ago and every printer sold
was without any cartridges included. That seems to be their modus
operandi for deeply discounted pricing. I'm sure the printer makers
would not care so much because they know people need to buy those ink
cartridges, and that's where the real money is made, and still very few
will know about refilling or consider skipping the color cartridge.
