I'm looking for a monochrome (e.g. black only only) ink jet printer.
Connection by parallel port, USB, Firewire, or ethernet (TCP/IP) is OK.

A color printer with a single separate black cartridge that can function
in monochrome mode with the color cartridge(s) missing would be acceptable.
But I understand that most (or all) color ink jet printers won't function
if a cartridge is missing.

Anyone every heard of either such printer?

Phil
There are some HP printers that will function without a colour cartridge and I
believe some that you can run with a grayscale cartridge instead of the colour
cartridge.
Bob Headrick has posted this information here in the past, alternatively try
talking to a HP dealer.

HP DeskJet and PhotoSmart printers that use the number 56, 92, 94, or 96 (or
the equivalent regionalized) black cartridges can operate with only the black
cartridge installed (and an empty space for the color cartridge).
Specifically, I know the following support this feature:

DeskJet 450, 3930, 3940, 3840, 5150, 5440, 5550, 5650, 5740, 5940, 6500 series,
6620, 6800 series, 9800 series

Photosmart 7150, 7350, 7550, 8150, 8450, 8750

In the documentation this is referred to as "reserve mode". Most of the
all-in-one and PSC units that use the above cartridges will also print or
receive faxes in reserve mode but will not copy or send faxes in reserve mode.
The printers that use individual ink tanks such as the Business Inkjet models
or the models that use the #15 or 45 cartridges do not support reserve mode.

Hi.

On a shelf, right above this monitor, I have a Canon BJC 4300. It can take
one Black cart, or one 3 Col Photo Cart, or a Printhead with a small Black
tank and small a 3 Col tank.

All these are still available, although I suspect it is quite an elderly
machine. I don't know if it still works, and don't intend buying a cart to
find out.

If you happen to be in the West of Scotland, you would be more than welcome
to empty that space on my shelf.

In that vein, I have a Citizen Projet II that is black only, it can use
a modified HP 26 cart.

Read what Bob Headrick has said but please ignore Measekite who has given you
bad advice. It is essential that you choose the right printer, if you buy just
any HP printer you may not get one that will print without a colour cartridge.
Measekite's message suggests that any HP printer will do but that is not
correct in common with most of his posts.

BUY AN HP WITH A BLACK AND TRICOLOR CART. LET THE TRICOLOR RUN OUT OR

DO NOT USE COLOR. THE BLACK WILL PRINT EVEN IF THE TRICOLOR IS EMPTY
AND YOU WILL NOT BURN OUT ANY PRINT HEAD THAT HAS ANY VALUE.

I've tried several stores around here (office stores, electronics stores)
that sell computers and peripherals, and all of them are totally clueless
on the subject. But that is typical of low pay sales people.

I'd like to no sacrifice a color cartridge for such a purpose. I'd like
to be coming home with only a couple black cartridges after buying the
printer (they seem to be sold w/o any cartridges anymore, apparently to
make the initial prices as low as possible for competition purposes, so
they can rape your wallet later on the cartridges).

That is what I want to do ... not have a color cartridge at all (as opposed
to having one and letting it run empty that Mister Uppity Caps suggested).

|
| Photosmart 7150, 7350, 7550, 8150, 8450, 8750

I'll write these down and go shopping again. Previous shopping attempts
found only clueless sales people in various stores.

My printing use will only be occaisional, but will probably involve
200 to 500 pages in the few days it does get used. Any special advice
for that kind of usage?

That seems a bit strange. I could understand maybe the copying ability
being compromised in reserve mode, but the sending of faxes I'd think
should be doable even if there is no cartdrige at all (and no blank paper
to print anything on).

Fortunately, I have no need of any fax features. I've only needed to
receive and send a fax once since 1993 and I did that through Kinkos.

Bob this ain't too far off topic, I have not yet tried it but how about filling

an empty and not yet burned out color cartridge with black in all 3 chambers? I
have a Deskjet 722C and would be interested in your input because when printing
B&W pictures they often come out tinted green or red. Thanks, GS

At that usage for an inkjet I would look at the DeskJet 6540, see
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF05a/18972-236251-236261-14438-f51-357210.html

Depending on your usage you may also be interested in the DeskJet 6540dt (with
duplexer for automatic two-sided printing) or one of the 6840 versions
(networking with or without duplexing). See
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF02a/18972-236251-236261.html

BTW, the DeskJet printer will come with both black and color cartridges
included. You do not need to install the color cartridge.

How often will you print 200-500 pages per day? If more than a few times a
month a low end laser might be a better choice. In normal mode the #96
cartridge will deliver about 800 pages, perhaps twice that in draft mode.
Draft mode would probably be acceptable for most uses, on the DeskJet's draft
mode looks pretty good.

Bob Headrick
