What did you do before the "fatal exception" error came up?
Did you:
A) Install software.
B) Uninstall software.
C) Open a specific program such as word, exel, solitare, OE.
D) none of the above.
If the answer is (D) tell us what you did.
After that we may have something to go on IF you decide to listen to
what is being said and quit being a standoff-ish little prick.
We can't read your mind and we can't pull an answer out of our ass'
without a little help.
Any relevent information is helpful no matter how technical it sounds.
The more we have the more we can help.
IIRC, fatal exceptions in Windows98 have codes with them.. Usually
looks like this on a blue screen..
A Fatal Exception XX has occured at 0E 0028:F000FF57
Press any key to restart
Whatever code you are getting, write it down exactly and come back
with it and your problem may be an easy one.
Just so you know, telling people to fuck off is NOT the way to get
help. I am just in a giving mood today.

No I was just playing a game then it went off and now it does this.It wont
start and I cant even get to the game.

First of all if all you were doing was playing a game that was already
installed on the computer then I wouldn't be in such a panic as you
are. You don't break a computer simply by playing a game that's
already on it. As long as you don't go trying to fix your friend's
computer you should be okay. Just tell him you were playing such and
such game and you got the error. When you got the original error did
you shutdown Windows 98 properly or did you simply turn the computer
off? Turning off the computer without shutting Windows down properly
may have aggravated the problem. Whatever you do, don't go opening the
case. Have you tried running scandisk from a DOS prompt? If I were
you though, I would just leave it alone and let your friend fix the
problem. Like I said, if all you were doing was playing a game on the
computer then you really didn't break the computer. However, the more
you try to fix the problem the worse the problem may become. If you've
already tried "fixing" it and you think you've screwed it up even worse
than ever then you may want to try running scandisk. Here are the
instructions.
1. Turn the computer on.
2. As soon as you see the phrase "Starting Windows 98" press the F8 key
that's at the very top row of your keyboard.
3. Choose the option that says "Command prompt only" or something like
that. I'm going from memory here.
4. When you see C:\Windows> type "scandisk c" (Don't type the quotation
marks" and then press the ENTER key on your keyboard.
5. If any errors come up read what they say and take the appropriate
action. Some errors can be deleted others will need to be fixed. The
program will let you know of any errors that must be repaired.
6. When it asks if you want to do a surface scan choose no.
7. When the program finishes click the EXIT button and you'll be back
to the DOS prompt. Type the word win and press the ENTER key on your
keyboard.
If Windows still doesn't start and you still get a fatal error then
there could be something wrong with the computer itself. If there is
an error just post it here exactly as it appears on your screen and
someone will probably have an answer for you. |

I do have advice - good advice: Quit top posting.
I tell you that for your own good. Many seasoned veterans will
completely ignore you if you top post. I assume you want the largest
possible audience for your posts - so quit top posting. You have one
strike against you with that AOL address - most AOL people disguise
their address so as not to turn off other posters.

To take windows out of the computer you need a special 'de-install' tool.
You can get these online, but your easiest and quickest way would be just to
pop into your local PC World and explain that you need a 'type 2 de-install'
tool to remove Windows98 from a corrupted computer - ask them for a 3.5"
version, then you can do it through the floppy drive. They will probably
have one - don't pay more than about £5 for that tho. Obviously, once you
have removed windows properly, you can put it back on again and you will
need a 're-install' tool (type 2, 3.5" again). You might find they have them
as a set in PC World - just ask one of the spotty students in there. You
might have to use a USB one, but they are more expensive.
Normally that would be enough to fix this kind of problem, but if you have
borrowed this PC from someone else, then you probably want to put it back
exactly as they had it - you can do this 2 ways - Either use the backup CD
of their settings and simply restore their settings, theme, documents and
values, or you will need another tool from PC World - a 'type 3 recovery
gidger'. They are less common as most people have backups, but PC World will
probably have one of those in the back. That will probably be a USB or
parallel dongle device, which you will need a special unlock key for, but
don't worry - instructions will be in the box with the gidger.
You could remove the case and check that the side grommits have not come
loose - they are the small black hexagonal grommits, usually on the left
hand side of the main 3.3v addin groove in an Athlon machine, or above the
the coil voltage regulator in a pentium machine. If they look OK, then check
the mount dampners haven't shifted past the 3rd point on the catchment. If
they have, just drag them back with a small screwdriver, or sharp pencil -
they should be seated somewhere between the 1st and 2nd point - they will
lock in place when seated correctly. |
