Most people use a Kensington lock (not sure if there's a generic
term). That's a thin cable that attaches to the laptop through a
special hole most laptops provide for the purpose. It's pretty easy
to defeat with heavy duty wire cutters but will stop the laptop from
walking away by itself. I think anything short of locking the laptop
in a safe would slow down anyone trying to take it only slightly more
at best. |

The last hotel I stayed in had one of the usual guest safes in the room. It
was not only large enough to hold a laptop, but even had a power point so
that you could charge it. |

Pelican makes some nice cases with foam that you can put padlocks on.
http://cases4less.com/ has a wide selection and decent prices. Make
sure you put the bike lock thru the handle. I also run my cables thru
the padlocks holding the cover closed. |

Keeping the safe out of site, and locked up, is the only thing close to
a 100% guarantee.
While chains/cables and locks might be unbreakable, the things they're
attached to usually aren't.
Look for a hotel with a room or front-desk safe.

What I usually do, when there's no safe available, is lock my laptop
in my LOCKED suitcase. Out of sight, out of mind.

Kensington lock can be opened in 30sec with a pen top or piece of card...
less if you practice... ;-(

The Pelican cases are decent. You might also visit a gunshop, take your
laptop with you, and see if they can find you a case that will fit it--if
they do most likely it will be a Pelican but they may have others that are
more aesthetically pleasing and yet still reasonably secure.
That, a couple of good padlocks, and a length of hardened chain should make
it sufficiently difficult to deter any thief who doesn't badly want that
specific laptop.
The hard part in a hotel room is finding something solid to chain it to.

Keeping it out of sight is always the best bet with anything you want
to hold on to, however you can't take account of the nasty little
scrote that will rifle through your stuff until he comes across
something worth a few quid.
Backpackers use use something called the PacSafe (get them from ebay or
online http://www.pac-safe.com/) which is a steel mesh bag and steel
cable that attaches to something solid. It can't be slashed /cut open
easily as a kensington can, simply put ur laptop bag inside it and lock
it up.
Hope this helps. |
