512 MB Video Ram |
|
|
Are there any AGP cards out there that have 512 MB RAM?
The only ones I have found were very expensive ones from 3D-Labs. Any
NVidia 6800's out there with 512MB? |

Why do you need a 6800 card with 512MB on it? |

At Newegg.com there is this, it's a low-end GPU with 64bit
memory bus, so 512MB on it is a waste.

I do not have Doom3 installed anymore, but I remember one video setting that
was only recommended to cards with 512MB or more video memory. I think the
setting was 'ULTRA' texture detail.
I can only imagine the new games coming out will also be pushing the limits
and have ultra textures, rather than just high and very-high. I want to be
prepared for future games as it will be another 2 years or so before I buy
another super high end video card. |

YOu could find a card with 512MB but usually those cards have slower memory
so you gain nothing, stick to 256 and geforce 7800gtx and trust me you can
play quake on ultra details with it ! |

If you can wait until the 7th of November:
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=27225
You could get a 512 MB 7800 GTX.
Oh sorry, you said AGP, so that won't do.

He said AGP, so the 7800 cards are out. ATI was supposed to
release their X1800 card in an AGP version, but they canceled. The
best AGP you can get now is the 6800 Ultra. |

Yeah, but don't. Get a BFG 6800 GT OC instead. Performance almost as
good as the Ultra for much less money... |

No Shader Model 3.0 support. The BFG 6800 GT OC is a much better choice... |

I've yet to see a game that runs in a noticeably crippled mode if the card
does not have SM3.0.
On the X800 and 6800 series (both are a dead end regardless of SM level) of
graphics cards, SM2.0b is more than enough. Eventually SM3.0 will be a must,
but the games that will require it will most likely be so fillrate and
memory demanding that you wouldn't be able to run it on an X800 or 6800
series card anyway.
Get it? SM3.0 should not be used as a factor when making your decision to
buy a previous generation video card. |

Then you have yet to see Age of Empires III.

Sure it should, especially if the buyer is staying AGP for now. I don't
plan on upgrading my PC for another couple of years, but my ATI 9800 XT
was dying and I needed a new AGP video card. The age of SM 3.0 games
has begun with the release of AOE III, so I don't want to be without SM
3.0 for the next two years! |

I played the demo. Really enjoyed it too.

You'll have to explain this AOE3 thing to me, since I ran the demo on my
system (9800 Pro) with 4x-AA and 16x-AF @ 1024x768 and with all the graphics
options at max and had a semi smooth framerate. Granted, I have a high end
CPU (FX-53 oc'd to 55) but that shouldn't make any difference in this case.
Given the way my 9800 Pro tackled AOE3, an X850XT PE AGP wouldn't crack a
sweat.
Two YEARS before your next upgrade?! No offense to your recent purchase man
(I realize we work hard for our hardware and want to feel like it's gonna
last us and that we got our money's worth) but if you take the game F.E.A.R.
as setting the new standard for sys reqs., then your 6800 series video card
is already insufficient, ... now.
Realistically, you need a 7800 or X1800 class GPU to play the game the way
the developers intended. And that's a PRESENT day game. Can you imagine how
your 6800 will hold up to games of a year from now? |

Yes, some...
But 512MB is nothing more than a virtual penis enlargement. Especially
