Radeon 9800 256mb help needed |

Hello all. I am hoping you can solve a problem I have been having with
a new rig I am assembling. Everything works smoothly, except for the
vid card. I can play movies, etc with no troubles, but as soon as I
play a graphic intensive game, the whole system locks up and I need
to manually reboot the PC. The odd thing is, that I can play low
graphic games like caesar 3 with no problems. Its only newer games
that cause the issue. I have the power cable dedicated to only the
HD and vid card as I read online, and all the other components are on
seperate power cables. I updated the drivers to the newest ones, and
it still caused the issue just as before I updated. I am not sure if
its my power supply, Its rated at 500W max, but can dip as low as 230
on certain voltages according to the PSU label. Please help, I am at
my wits end as I have spent 3 months now trying to iron out the kinks
from this system, only to have this last issue stop me in my tracks.

Have you checked the temperature of the video card when it crashes? If
it is too hot to touch this may be your problem and you will need to
improve the ventilation. I had similar problems with my 9700 Pro and
had to add a fan below the video card to exhaust the hot air out of the
case.
If that is not the problem, you might want to try a monitoring program
such as Speedfan to make sure that the voltages from your power supply
are not going out of spec when you are playing games. |

Overheating. I had the same problem with my 9800XT. In my case the fan
on the card was dying, but you might try leaving your PC case open for
awhile, which will tell you if it is just a case ventilation problem... |

Hmmm that is odd. I actually opened the case, and placed a large roo
fan against the open case to super cool the inside, and the sam
issue was occuring. Could it be I have a defective card? I am goin
to try and get a better PSU to see if that works. : |

Have you installed up-to-date motherboard drivers? These drivers control the |
AGP port and that affects the graphics card. Also if you have the AGP port
set in bios to 8x try lowering it to 4x. Theres little performance diferance
but some motherboards are unstable at 8x. |

have you loaded the vgart driver from the motherboard driver cd ? |
you dont state the chipset, but most have a specific agp driver you must
load besides the ATI driver. You may want to consider a clean install of
windows if this computer has run other video cards ie nvidia,etc. If the
power supply is a no name, then consider buying an Antec, Enermax, etc.
Money well spent. |

I notice you say "I have the power cable dedicated to only the HD and
vid card," Meh :(.
ATI recommend, and it's a practice I've always followed with a card
that needs an auxiliary power cable, that the power cable should not
be shared with any other device.
I'd suggest you try putting connecting the card with its own lead from
the PSU.

If you have not much power connector try to plug the videocard with a
dr-rom device or dvd rom... it should fix the power problem |

Cheap PSU's are rubbish, a cheap 500w unit may put out only half that
and a 9800 runs with 480w PSU's, of a decent quality, Antec / Enerma
etc
Don't set all your card settings at their highest, as with the like
of Far Cry doing so will make some levels so full of fog shootin
becomes difficult at range
The vid card's power supply should be on it's own, not with any othe
item on the same rail as written in the instructions |
