Thermaltake CL-G0009 Schooner |

Hi Guys!
I'm the owner of a Leadtek Winfast A400 GT TDH (GeForce 6800GT AGP):
http://www.leadtek.com/3d_graphic/winfast_a400_1.html.
Does anyone know, if the CL-G0009 from thermaltake
(http://www.thermaltake.com/coolers/chipset/cl-g0009schooner/cl-g0009.htm)
is able to cool sufficiently for a GeForce 6800GT card (without
attaching any fans)?
Do you by any coincidence know, if the CL-G0009 is compatible with this
graphics controller, and has someone successfully used it with this
card?

I read a review, that says that if you use this cooler, you will STILL need
a fan around it inside your system. If not, you have a large massive heat
radiator, most likely right beside you CPU. You will need to somehow get rid
of the heat produced from the large heatsink. It doesn't all come off the
little part that sticks outside the case.

Thanks for the reply.
You wouldn't remember where you read that review, would you?
The once I've read don't say anything about the need of an extra fan
(But obviously you have to have some kind of airflow in the cabinet, to
transport the heat away). But then they don't say anything about using
it on a GeForce 6800GT either.

I read the same review.
Conclusion: Using this cooler will actually make your system HOTTER!
Kind of ironic isn't it?

Not really ironic, it just shows the reviewer either rushed
the review and made a technical mistake, or doesn't
understand that it is impossible for it to be "warming both
the videocard and the case to almost nuclear levels."
(author's words)
The video card itself continues to produce same heat no
matter which heatsink is installed. It will not make the
case hotter, only any object(s) adjacent to the passive
'sink, _except_ the rare video cards that started out with
an original 'sink that had a rear-exhaust ductwork (like
early nVidia FX cards) that exhausted directly out of the
case instead of inside. The typical X800 XT used in the
review, does not have that kind of rearward-slot-exhaust
'sink as stock and so it is in this context, still invalid.
Unfortunately anyone can write a product review. At least
the author correctly identified that running that 'sink has
the potential to shorten the card's life, which does tend to
be more important than whether the northbridge or an
adjacent PCI card was 5C hotter, since they typically run
well under 5C from their upper threshold of stability.
It's not hard to cool a video card, relatively quietly,
inaudible from the outside of the system case.
A $1 slimline heatsink and a 60x15mm fan running at 5V will
suffice if you can sacrifice 1 PCI slot under the card to
allow clearance. |

Thank you all for the replies.
That review really doesn't recommend the CL-G0009. But I'm declined to
agree with kony - To me it does seem a bit as if the reviewer has
rushed through the review. I've read other reviews, which seem more
thorough, and which give the cooler a better grade. That the system
will be a few degrees (< 5) hotter than with the stock cooler is what I
suspected. However the main reason for buying it is not to make my
system cooler, but to make it more quiet. My Winfast A400 comes with a
gigantic faning solution, which I would like to get rid of, since it's
fairly loud. But I'd rather have a loud graphic controller, than one
which doesn't work, because it got too hot!
So basically I still haven't made up my mind about this.
Isn't there anyone out there, who has tried to use the CL-G0009 with a
GeForce 6800GT? |

Artic cooling does a 6800GT cooler
http://www.arctic-cooling.com/vga2.php?idx=40 thats really good for the 6800
range you must have a power connector on the Vid card (gigabyte passive
cooling no good will not fit no power connector) and its quiet also.
