Information wanted on monitor response time? |

Information wanted on monitor response time?
Ads for Flat screen monitors are now talking about response time. Does
anyone know what the response time is for a CRT monitor?
Please no E-mails just a posting to this group.

The response time is the time it takes an TFT pixel to change from one
color to another. That happens instantly on a CRT monitor, so they don't
really have the ghosting problem. Usually, it does take 1/85 seconds to
change, because of the refresh rate. This isn't called response time. |

As the other poster said its irrelevant on CRTs but with LCDs a lot of
people say 16ms or less for games. The caveat being some makers fudge
their numbers and as some reviewers point out usually theres a
compromise to get the lower response times. I think all of the faster
ones are 6 bit panels that dither the colors. Another way you can tell
is itll say 16.2 mil colors vs 16.7 mil for 8 bit and many of the 16.2
mil shades are dithered. |

My BenQ FP757-12 is 17" 12ms and 8 bit (16.7M).. but then again I paid nearly
$500 CAD for it back in Feb... often wondered if it was worth it when I see 19"
LCD's for like $350.. (and refurbs for < $250)..

Response times, measured in millsecond, is considered important for
gaming on LCDs to prevent motion bluring. Consequently, vendors are
developing very short response time LCD displays. Some are now quoting
as low a 2ms.
The problem with this is that LCD response time varies widely depending
on the color of the transition that is being measured, but most quoted
response times are for grey to grey transitions. As www.anandtech.com
and www.tomshardware.com have demonstrated in their independent testing,
response time varies considerably for color, position on the screen,
etc. Since there are no standards for LCD monitor performance, vendors
are free to choose whatever they wishfor advertising response times;
most do not even specify what transition is being measured. Note also
that short response time is accompanied by reduction in viewing angle,
if that makes a difference (as it will with large LCD displays).
Since gaming is not done in a grey scale color pallet, it is best to be
wary of quoted response times in general. Attempt to see the monitor in
"action" since that is the only way to validate the monitor for a given
application.
