Anyone heard of "Island Inkjets" |
|

Stupid google.
In Seattle South Center Mall there is a shop i'm told called "Island
Inkjets" that offer refill as you wait solutions. Heard about it from
a friend who prints so little his i550 color heads clog, so he's
looking for something cheap but decent but would prefer not mail
ordering. Looks like "Island Inkjets" might be a BC based company and
the WSJ might have written about them. Anyone have a clue about them? |

Yes, they're a Canadian company based on Vancouver Island (Courtenay),
hence "Island Inkjet." I believe they've successfully managed to spread
across the USA and Canada, mostly in malls, and much to Measekite's
objections! From their website, they state: "In 2004 alone Island
Ink-Jetâ„¢ saved 1,636,806 cartridges from landfills."
I have one at my local Wal-Mart store. Never tried them. Maybe one
day I'll give them a test ride.

Certainly not as big as cartridge world, and not across america it
seems. There seems to be a blindspot for the east cost, but 36 states
and provences is very respectable. At least three times the number of
stores Frys electronics has. But I was shocked there is one near me,
which if I knew about them before July I might have bought from them
rather than MIS. |

Well, there's one about 3 miles from me. Haven't got around to it yet
as I still have a considerable amount of bulk and prefilled to use up.
And it doesn't help that I have no special creative project lined up
other than humdrum emails and grocery lists. When I finally visit our
new Wal-Mart I'll have a look at the Island Inkjet kiosk and see what
they have to offer. I'd like to try prefilled cartridges, if they carry
them. And I'm curious if their BCI-3e black is dye or pigmented. Or I
can just find out my emailing the head office . . .

So this is the problem with head clogs lack of use - and here's me
thinking all that time it was my OEM inks --- after all that good
information on this NG ---- what does someone have to believe! (Note
only caps where necessary)

They "might", then again they "might not". Island Inkjet has more then
double the number of retail locations than Fry's electronics, a store
you seem to be fixcated on. I know nothing at all about them but it
stands to reason since they started in 1999 and rather than go belly
up in 2005 they have over 75 stores. |

My friend doesn't print in color and has the i550 IIRC. He's had it
for a few years at the very least. Anyways he buys new color every 6
months. Since he didn't use color he thought they were just
evaporating, but I believe this is the cleaning cycles. Anyhow he's
starting to complain about the fact that he has to do several cleanings
after he replaces the cartridges to clear them.
Now you should be skeptical about what anyone says in this group. But
it's my belief that he doesn't use color enough and that because of
this lack of use the nozzles get clogged. Thus far he's always been
able to use the cleaning cycles and clear the clogs. He just wants
something in there in the event he does want to print in color he can,
running without ink would be worse esp since the only time he had cause
for color was his wedding reception. Something cheap so he's not
spending $60ish a year for a space filler, and something he can use for
deep cleanings and not waste dollars.
But you should believe that lack of use can result in a clog. This is
reasonable. |

They are indeed a BC based company, in fact they originate from my area
on Vancouver Island.
They have kiosks in many malls, and I believe have now franchised
the biz. I hear intermittent reports about them, which doesn't surprise
me since they do the work "while you wait" so each kiosk runs somewhat
independently. I see a fair amount of turn over of personnel. I don't
know how many inks they use for refilling, and how accurately the inks
replicate OEM, and I don't know how well they process the cartridges for
refilling, which that is required.

I don't know how different each kiosks is, but here on lower Vancouver
Island they don't have a lot of choices of inks, at least not for Epson
printers. They seems to basically have inks that are supposed to be
equivalents to the OEM, bit nothing exotic.

I'd use the word "stores" with some quotes around it.
The "stores" are smaller than my home's bathroom, in most cases.

LAST 12 MONTHS AND THEN WHAT ARE THE TOTAL 12 MONTH SALES OF THE OTHER.

Don't know, but with all due respect i'm not the one who tries to tell
people in England to buy a printer at Fry's electronics, a place that a
few stores in a handful of states. I've been corrected, the number of
"stores" [thanks arthur] is 240. So I would guess 20mil to 60mil would
be reasonable for the entire franchise where 20mil to 60mil would be
for a single Fry's store. That's the nature of selling products that
sell for $5.00 a pop and frys has been around since 1985 vs 1999. I'm
pulling numbers out of my ass so if you have the real sales figures by
all means share them.
But as you admited before, your only purpose in this group is to harass
people because someone treated you unfairly sometime last year. |
