cross post-----cd burning software problems. |
|
|
About a week ago I posted the following question
* * * * * * *
I have windows XP home edition. I installed Adaptec easy cd and direct
cd ver 4.02 which did not work, so I uninstalled it. I have removed
everything I can find that has to do with Roxio and Adapted. When I
start my computer the little icon comes up in the area near the time and
it says something to the effect that you have recording software that
makes windows XP unstable and windows has not loaded drivers.
How can I get rid of this short of messing with the registry which I
would not want to attempt. I guess I could just leave it alone as it
apparently doesn't hurt anything but I would rather it not be there.
The company that made my external cd recorder uses Nero now and they are
sending me that software. Reckon what is left of that old software will
bother this Nero software?
The reason I'm wanting more software is because I am not comfortable
with the recording software that came with XP. I really liked that
direct cd and I hear that Nero has incd which is about the same.
* * * * * * *
I got an answer that I should get a reg.cleaner and CC Cleaner was
recommended. I downloaded it and used it and it didn't cure the problem.
I got the Nero sortware that the folks who made my cd burned sent me. I
installed it and doesn't open InCD when I put a blank cdrw in like
directions say. The other way they said to open it was from windows
explorer and to Rt. click the drive and select format with InCD from the
drop down menu. I did and formatted the cd. When I try to use it my
computer crashes. I said, not again and uninstalled it and guess what?
It has left an icon down where the other one is. I run CC Cleaner again
and I still have the left over from both software. What should I do,
just forget it and us what came with XP?. I would really like to get rid
of those icons.

Run Nero Clean Tool (to uninstall and clean out Nero/InCD):
http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/enu/General_CleanTool.html
Run RoxiZap (to clean out cRoxio crap):
http://www.roxio.com/en/support/kb/ecddvdc/ee6000061.jhtml
Double-click CDGONE.REG (to clean out cRoxio registry crap):
http://www.aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip
Reboot.
Disable IMAPI:
Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services, double-click "IMAPI CD
Burning", click Stop, then set "Startup type" as "Disabled".
Reboot, and install Nero and InCD. |

Pull the folder for adaptec into the recycle bin and delete it then go back
to a restore point before you installed the software for adaptec in system
restore. Hit start, all programs, accessories, system tools, system restore.

Thanks yall,
Got rid of those 2 pesky icons, but it left me with a message saying it
is trying to install cccommon and can't find the path. I can't get rid
of that.
What I liked about direct cd was you could go to file/save as and name
the cd burner drive and save it to it. Will InCD do that?

I think the version you were trying to install was around long before XP |
even came out. The current version is 8 and it is now called Drag to
Disc. I would be surprised if version 4 was ever even updated to work
with XP. |

Did you have install problems with some softwares? Check your temp
folder and see if there is any file with similar names to give you a
clue?

InCD is far less buggy packet writing software than DirectCD. For InCD
to work trouble free, all cRoxio udf crap has to be removed. Also,
don't initiate another operation until the drive activity light stops
blinking from the previous operation.
You've been lucky if you did not lose data when you used DirectCD:
=====================
From: Mike Richter (Roxio Shill)

| Quote: | I'm a great fan of DirectCD "packet writing,"
which allow me to use CD-RWs like huge floppies.
I've never had any problems with DirectCD.
|
Wait. You will.
=====================
In fact, DirectCD has so many problems that DirectCD is ditched even by
none other than a Roxio Shill !!
=====================
From: Mike Richter (Roxio Shill)
Date: 8/19/02
I have used only DCD for packet writing,
have had no problems due to the software
- but too many due to the format itself
to bother with it any longer.
=====================
From: Mike Richter (Roxio Shill)
Date: 6/17/02
uninstalled DCD
when I stopped testing for Roxio
=====================
The above Mikey's statement is the first ever case in which a Shill is
rejecting the very product IT is shilling for.
With a Shill like this, Roxio doesn't need any critics!

Clearly, you identified the problem, but the O.P. needs a solution. A
reg cleaner won't do the job because what was installed was not a
registry entry but the files needed to add packet-written discs to those
readable by the filesystem. Trying to add InCD compounded the error. By
this stage, I've no solution to undo the dual problems.
Were I faced with that situation, I'd try adding (!) the UDF reader from
Adaptec/Roxio/Sonic in the hope that since it's compatible with XP it
will replace the earlier, incompatible elements. The odds are not good,
but it's a possibility. I think it unlikely that Ahead's reader will
undo the DCD version previously installed; if it were able to do so, the
installation of Nero would probably have succeeded.
Note that even if one finds the offending file(s) - and I don't know how
to do that - it's likely that at least some cannot simply be deleted
from within Windows. One or more is likely to have run (which is why
Nero couldn't install) and therefore must be terminated before deletion.

One option you may have is download the Windows Install Cleanup Utility |
from MS. If it lists anything from the old install, let it clean up the
registry. This might at least allow you to install something else.
