comfused about how to compare laptops |
|
|
Hi, i'm not sure how to compare laptops...an amd 64 2.2 ghz with a
centrino m740 1.73 ghz...with a p4 3 ghz. and the p4 has a 5400 rpm hdd
v 4200 rpm for the other 2. What i don't understand is that people have
said the centrino may be faster even though it has less ghz...and then
the amd is 64 bit so that may be better? so how to compare? oh and i
don't care about battery life/weight.
Thnx |

Each of these processors uses different technology, hence the numbers
are not comparable.

A faster disk should improve the performance of any laptop, regardless
of the processor. Some are available with a 7200 rpm drive.

It is possible to make a general statement indicating roughly how these
processors compare, but in reality, each may have its strengths and
weaknesses. Thus, one processor may be faster for some tasks and
another may be faster for others. You need to look at some benchmark
results to see where each one excels. You can try WWW.TOMSHARDWARE.COM,
for example.

This may be an advantage when we have applications that require and
take advantage of 64bit architecture. Until then, I believe there are
no advantages.

You will generally get a better bang for the buck with a desktop rather
than a laptop. |

The AMD 64 bit CPU's are very fast, even with 32 bit programs. If you don't
care about battery life, I would consider the AMD.... I run them in my
desktop machines and they perform well.

The power consumption on the Turions is on a par with that of the Pentium M.
Apparently there are some machines out there that take advantage of that
capability.
