Does Plextor still make the 'best quality' drives? |
|
|
Recently, I had a CD with occasional read errors. This was in my
Plextor 40X double-side SCSI drive. So I tried the CD in my LiteON
CD-RW drive. Many, many more errors. The CD hardly readable in the
Liteon drive. The CD was burned about two years ago. Fuji brand,
but I don't know if it was really a TY disk.
This recent experience was with CD drives, but I was wondering if the
Plextor DVD drives are that much better at reading marginal disks than
say NEC or Sony or any of the other top-rated DVD RW drives?
I'm not interested in the blazingest-faster-than-fastest performance
writing DL DVDs. I'm much more interested in being able to read all
the CD-Rs I burned myself a years later on.

By reputation, the Plextor drives are supposed to be very
good. We install them for clients and have had very few
problems although consumer-grade SCSI CD and DVD drives are
very rare today. We are currently building systems with the
new Plextor PX-740A dual-layer DVD drives.
As for longevity of burned CD-R's, the variables include the
dye used in the media itself, storage conditions, degree of
exposure to light when stored, and conditions of use. For
some damaged CD-R's, the best drive to use to read them might
well be the same drive that burned them. Next would be a
similar type of drive from a different manufacturer. |

I happen to like SCSI but I never expected to be able to get a SCSI
DVD writer. Who makes them? I'm aware of a Pioneer (?) SCSI DVD-ROM
but I'll pass on that.
FYI: You can find Plextor SCSI CD drives on ebay and I have bought
two of the 40X double-wide CD-ROMs there and been very happy. |

See if you can get hold of a Plextor PX4012S SCSI CD writer. That's the
best reader that I've ever used. I have a scratched test disc here and the
4012S is the only drive that can extract audio from the disc all the way
through.
Cheers

Short answer: Someone else's assumption. Because I as the OP
referred to Plextor SCSI CD writers, one respondent assumed I wanted a
SCSI DVD writer. I don't really. I want to get a DVD writer with the
same quality as my Plextor SCSI CD reader. No one has really answered
that question.

The question cannot be answered. Plextor is long-known for
its SCSI CDROM, CD-R and CD-RW drives, and has the reputation
to boot. DVD drives are still relatively new and in evolution.
And there are very few SCSI DVD drives that can be afforded by
the consumer. Morever, just how well a CD or DVD drive performs
is also dependent on the available software (i.e., applications)
for it, and these are also developing for DVD, as it moves into
double-layer recording. The state-of-the-art Plextor DVD recorder,
the PX-740A, has been on the market for less than 4 months, and
the internal version is available only as IDE. There is an older
Plextor, the PX-716SA, for S-ATA controllers. You might want to
ask this question again, after 6 to 8 months. |

The current state of the art Plextor DVD recorder is the PX716. The 740 is
a low cost alternative which doesn't include some of the 716's more
advanced features.
Plextor have just announced the 750 and 760 drives - the 760 appears to be
the new flagship drive while the 750 is the lower cost alternative.
Cheers

agreed. I always claim that plextor does make best drives outthere. It's
just a matter of a person if it's affordable or not.
I have Premium CDR drive and although it's very picky about media and speed,
it didn't make a coaster yet. I bought NEC DVD because of it's low price,
and so far so good...
Because I as the OP
