I have a VAIO. Its touchpad lets me scroll up and down, and go back a
page in Explorer.

I just bought an Intellimouse Optical for occasional use. After I
downloaded and installed software for it, I could configure it via the
Mouse control panel.

But after reboot, it looks as though the Intellimouse PS/2 driver has
grabbed the touchpad, instead of the VAIO driver. The touchpad still
works, but I can't scroll up and down, or go back a page in Explorer.
The Hardware tab of the Mouse control panel shows an Intellimouse PS/2
port mouse and a USB Intellimouse Optical mouse (when the
Intellimouse is plugged in), and the Device Manager shows the same
thing.

There's no option to disable the Intellimouse PS/2 mouse (as there is
for the USB Intellimouse Optical). I'm a little worried about rolling
back or uninstalling the Intellimouse drivers in case they take
something useful with them, and I'd sooner have them around anyway. Is
there a way to make the Intellimouse PS/2 driver yield to the VAIO
touchpad driver?

Thanks in advance,

Simon Morris

Hi Simon -

The Intellimouse PS/2 Mouse that you see in Device Manager is your Touchpad.

You can try rolling back the driver on it. But, beforehand, take a manual
System Restore Checkpoint (Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools
| System Restore .. tick the Create a Manual Checkpoint radio button, click
Next, give your checkpoint a name and click Create then Finished).

Then, in Device Manager, bring up the Properties sheet for the PS/2 Mouse
(Touchpad) and, on the Driver tab, click the Rollback button. Reboot your
computer and see if you now have the proper Touchpad driver replaced, along
with your Intellimouse driver for the external mouse.

If things go awry, boot to Safe Mode (press F8 just before the Windows logo
appears and select Safe Mode from the menu). Follow the prompts to start up
System Restore and roll back to your manual checkpoint.

I had the same problems with a Logitech driver taking over my Alps touchpad
on my VAIO, and rolling back the driver sorted it out.

Good luck.

Outstanding - that worked perfectly. I hadn't used System Restore
before, either, so thanks in particular for pointing out that that
would give me a backstop, and talking me through it.

Cheers,

S.
