hello,

i just recently purchased a used scsi tape (seagate std28000n) that came
with an adaptec aha 2940u/uw adaptor and a 50 pin ribbon. i eventually
got it to work even though some of the jumper settings now look dubious
(termination jumper was set to off).

i wanted to add an quantum atlas III 9.1 gb drive (now maxtor) in the
middle and no joy. i decided to remove the tape and put the hard drive
at the end to simpify things. I can see the hard drive only with the
adaptec scsi utility, did a media check but no format. The system, hangs
or reboots in linux (slackware 10.2), Knoppix 3.9, windows 98, and dos
bails out at the fdisk command when i use a boot floppy. The settings on
the hdrive now are scsi id '0', termination jumper 'on', spin up is
'on', and term power is 'off'(my understanding is that term power should
be supplied by the adaptor and that should be enough for 2 devices?).
I've tried term power 'on' with no improvement. I've been kind of
overwhelmed with all the terms, specs and standards here is a link to
the quantum in case i'm not 'seeing' something,

?channelpath=/en_us/Support/Product%20Support/Enterprise%20Storage/
Quantum%C2%AE%20Family/Atlas%20III

please note there is a 50 pin and 68 pin version of this drive. i have
the 50 pin atlas III, which i'm assuming is fast 20 narrow, 8 bit, 20 mhz.

i updated, flashed, my adaptor to version 2.20 in desperation.
everything went fine and the tape drive still works alone. tried with
the hard drive and i had the same problems. the flash update changed
some values in the scsi bios though. For device 0 (hard drive, and
actually for device 2, tape drive as well) i have start wide negociation
set to 'no' and the speeds set to '20mhz'. These were the default values
from the other bios and, to me, appropriate for these devices. All other
values remain on default. Termination is set to 'automatic' (does this
mean both term power and termination?), scsi adaptor id is '7', these
are the main ones i can think of offhand. here is a link to the adaptor,

http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/techspecs.jsp?sess=no&language=
English+US&cat=%2FProduct%2FAHA-2940UW&prodkey=AHA-2940UW

The cable is about 2 1/2 feet with 3 connectors. These are all the
variables i can think of with my limited knowledge. i would be happy to
supply more to get this problem resolved. If the drive is defective, i
have to bring it back soon. Unfortunately my lack of scsi knowledge
ipreventing me from making an accurate diagnosis.

Thanks for your patience, i know it was long. any help would be appreciated.
