Webcam equivalent of a camcorder |

Does anyone know if such a webcam exits that will have the same quality
(or near) that of a camcorder?
I just got a camcorder that has some webcam functionality.
And OMG, the quality is so much better than my usb2 genius webcam.
The picture is also so much brighter and isn't jerky.
I'm trying to read the specs of some web cams in the stores, but I can't
make head or tail of comparing them with camcorders.
Can anyone tell me what I should look out for?
How do I compare my camcorder with that of a webcam?
Or am I trying to compare apples and oranges?
These are some of the specs of my camcorder:
1/ 6”, 800,000 pixels CCD and double-sided aspherical lens ensures high
image quality
Movie: 400,000 effective pixels

It's a canon MV830i.
But actually, I'm just talking about a camcorder in general. Any
camcorder would give far superior quality than a webcam?

Sort of answering the question....
You can use your camcorder, in camcorder mode as a webcam with a
software product from OrangeWare. See
http://www.orangeware.com/endusers/webcamdv.html. You can try it free
and it works pretty well. This allows allows you to use all the normal
camcorder functions (zoom, fades, etc) while using it as a web cam. I
have tried it on Yahoo messenger and it works well.

if there is it will be located somewhere on the net..... what we do is look
for the information....
usb2 is fast but camcorders will always have a superior picture....
you could try using various security cameras.... i have a few but they plug
into pci cards that plug into pc rather than usb.....

I assume that when you're talking about your camcorder as a webcam,
it's connected to the PC via a Firewire port.
USB will not be able to transfer video at the rate required to give
viewable video. I've not heard of Firewire webcams before - so I don't
think there's any webcam now that can give you camcorder quality video.

Apple Firewire webcam is called iSight, .25 inch ccd/640x480
Dont know its light levels.
OrangeMicro iBot dont hear much about them anymore,, firewire webcam.
Unibrain, Pyro several firewire webcams but no where near as popular as
usb for cheapies. |

I thought USB2 is as fast/faster than firewire?
You mean that all the USB2 cams out there are bull?
I have a genius USB2 cam, it's hella jerky and bad light/quality.
Actually, I connect to the camcorder via my tv-card's composite input
I will try USB/firewire today. Thx.

I have a Linksys WVC54G wireless Internet camera connected to my network. (mp4)
As far as quality, the limiting factor seems to be the bitrate and image size.
The default setting is 320x240 at a medium bitrate. At this setting the image
quality is OK over the Internet with a broadband connection. Still a bit jerky
at times depending on overall bandwidth for the up and down streaming. My max
upload is 384Kbs. When I try higher bit rates and 640x480 the image quality is
much better but movement is very jerky. (a still image looks great) So looks
like bandwidth issues.
Now that I re-read your post I see that you have good results with your
camcorder compared to your web cam and just want to know if higher quality web
cams are out there somewhere. So my reply is maybe not an answer to your
questions but I'll post anyway for what it's worth. |

My new Panasonic DV cam has both USB 2.0 and IEEE 1394 connections,
both of which can be used for DV transfer to the computer. Both work.
The IEEE 1394 through a $10 PC card from NewEgg, and USB through a
usual 2.0 port. The IEEE1394 connection does allow control of the
camcorder transport from the computer, the USB does not. One of the
modes in the DV cam is a "webcam" mode that works with USB only. It is
fixed at 320x240 resolution, and it looks very good--much better than
any webcam I've played with. Some software, including older versions of
MSN Messenger and iVisit, has trouble with it though. Interestingly,
there is a company name from OrangeWare that makes a driver called
WebCamDV to use a DV cam connected through the IEEE 1394 as a webcam.
So there are a lot of options for those DV cams with a broken transport. |

A high resolution professional composite cam may be better than a
camcorder, but you also pay more. Bottom line is that you usually
get what you pay for. Don't expect a camcorder to be as good as a
$10k professional cam, and don't expect a $19 usb cam to be as
good as a camcorder. Old camcorders can often be found at yard
sales and such where the cam part works ok, but the tape drive
has broken. Camcorders usually make interesting pan/tilt cams
because they usually have an auto iris, auto focus, and zoom
in/out capability (big lens help with the low light gathering and
the sharp zoomed image). If you like good quality, you may want
to look at getting a Sony EVI-D30, EVI-D31, EVI-D100 or EVI-D70
Pan/Tilt/Zoom Communications camera and using it with a good
capture card. |

Hi, actually in my post I was discussing on the "local" quality of the cam/s.
That means, it has not passed thru any encoding process or even passed thru the network.
But your post got me thinking too.
I've just realised that video-conferencing software & hardware severely lags behind today's internet
broadband speeds.
We already have all the technology, but it's just a matter of "putting it all together".
1. Software limitations:
I have a 1mbit upstream. Doing some calculations I realised that I could upload close to 700mb of
data in a time frame of 90mins. This is the same as watching a divx movie. You could practically
stream a divx movie from me and watch it in real-time.
But there exists no vide-conf software capable of streaming divx video from your cam.
Plz anyone correct me if I'm wrong. I hope I'm wrong actually.
2. Hardware limitations:
As pointed out in my 1st post, there seems to be (?) no webcam that has camcorder quality.
Some have pointed out that it's the USB interface that is the problem. I guess that's true.
My camcorder is plugged into my TV capture card and I get excellent quality even in full screen.
Video is bright and clear. I have a surveillance cam that has a composite out. I connected it to my
TV card and quality was not so good. it was dark too.
Therefore I did more digging and found out that the CCD (charged-coupled-devide) also plays a big
role.The bigger the ccd, the better the quality they say. However, a bigger ccd needs a bigger lens
and other stuff. Hence, we probably not going to find a webcam that gives camcorder quality.
I understand better now. This probably explains why the logitech "ball-shaped" cams give better
quality that the rest of the webcams out there. 'Cos they are a lot bigger.
I dream the day I can do full-screen video-conf over the internet.
Hope some manufacturers/software developers sees this and makes it happen.
It is therefore to my conclusion, that there exist no webcam that has the same quality as a
camcorder.

Why buy a new webcam? You can always use our software DVdriver to make
your camcorder function as a webcam.
