HP Laser Cartridges Use Past Expiration |

I am considering buying an HP 1020 to replace my defunct NEC laser
printer. I do not print much and my last cartridge lasted over six
years.
I understand that HP inkjet catridges have date chips that prevent the
cartridge from working, even if full, once the expiration date for that
cartridge has passed.
Is that also true of the cartridges for HP laser printers, or am I safe
in getting an HP laser printer given that I would expect a cartridge to
last for at least several years given my low useage?
Any advice is welcome. |

It depends on the printer, the Laserjet 1020 does not use a chipped cartridge
so there is no problem there, some other models do have chips but I am not sure
that the HP chipped cartridges have a built in expiry date rather they have
other intentions by chipping them. Toner has a very long life and you should
not be too concerned about it aging and failing but how long I am not sure,
certainly 2-4 years is reasonable.

If stored properly, toner should last a lot more than 4 years. I used
to have an HP III that ran fine even though the cartridge hadn't been
replaced for probably 15 years. I also have HP 4 sitting around that
still works, no idea how old the cart is.
I have 2 new toner carts for my current HP laser printer that are 3
years past date and they are still fine. Toner don't dry out & clog
like ink because they are already dry. Just make sure unused carts
remain sealed to prevent moisture buildup.

I have a IIIp which sits in the corner for backup purposes and that has
had the same (remanufactured) cartridge in it for years.
