Greetings all,

I have a Toshiba model A75S206 17" laptop that will not turn on. It was
one month out of warranty when it quit working. I can plug in the power
supply and the indicator light on the laptop shows the power supply is
working. There is also an indicator light that shows the battery is
charging. But the laptop will not turn on. It won't boot up. It won't do
anything. I have spoken to Toshiba in Japan twice and they have said that
in order for them to do anything they need to know the serial number.
Ahhhh! That's another problem. The Toshiba label on the bottom of the
laptop is rubbed out just enough that the serial number is not completely
readable. A tool to find the serial number will only work if the laptop
will boot up.
Does anyone have any idea of how to find the serial number in any other
way? If I have the serial number I definitely want to get this taken care
of by Toshiba. They have said they will fix it if I can find the serial
number.

This laptop belongs to my son. It quit working exactly one month after
the one year warranty expired. He is in the U.S. Army and he deployed to
Iraq three days after the laptop quit. I am doing all I can to get it fixed
by Toshiba for him. I will be forever grateful for any help you can give me
in finding out what the serial number is. That's the key and the end of the
road. This was going to be his life-line while he was in Iraq.

Sincerely,
DBS

Have you taken off the panels on the bottom of the laptop and looked on
their reverse (inside) sides? There could be a serial number on them. I
hope this helps. Why didn't Toshiba tell you if you could find the label in
another location on the laptop? They would know if there was one. Just a
guess, but have you tried booting the system up with the battery removed and
the unit on AC power?

Thanks for the input. I've had the battery out and tried to boot that way
with AC but no luck. I'll take the panels off again and look. Maybe this
time I'll see something. This has been one of the most confusing problems
I've come across. Toshiba's stance is that they won't do anything without
the serial number. That's the problem! If I could read the serial number,
they'd fix it. Catch 22!

Thanks.................................dbs

I've already tried holding down the power key for a minute and nothing
happened. I've also checked for a reset button and there isn't one. You
hate to think that Toshiba would manufacture a laptop in 2004 that only
lasts 13 months but it's true and I have it! Lucky me!

Somewhere on the laptop is a reset button. It could be on the bottom near
or in the RAM compartment, on the backside, etc. It might be imprinted
"RESET", but many no longer are. It could be under a 1/8 inch (3mm) hole
in the plastic. A paper clip is all that is required to activate it.
Anyway, this might bring it to life.

Another technique that worked on many older laptops is to remove AC
adapter, battery, and then hold down the power key for maybe a minute.
Leave the battery out and power from AC and see if it will start. If it
does, then replace the battery on the next boot.

I service Toshiba units -- usually older models -- and I've never seen a
s/n label inside the computer.

While I would look for it and try it, leaving the battery out with the
laptop also not connected to AC will also reset the laptop.

I've tried that, too. I think I'm at the end of the road for this one. The
crappy thing is that Toshiba has agreed to fix it as a one time exception
because of the circumstances but I have to have the s/n. Definitely a Catch
22.

Is it possible that you still have the box the laptop arrived in,

possibly in a basement or attic. I believe the S/N may be printed on a
label fixed to that box.

The S/N is printed on a white label fixed to the box the laptop arrived
in. Anyway if you don't find the box, you can call the toshiba
assistence number and ask for it if you have registered before. I mean,
in Italy if you buy a toshiba (I think this is international), then you
have to call them and give the serial number, name, adress... to
register your warranty period... Maybe your son did it.
Other solution is contact the shop where you bought it if you still
have the ticket... In the store they should register all the serial
numbers they sell.

I've bought a toshiba tecra two weeks ago, and today i'm getting my
fourth one, because the other three were "dead on arrival"; keep
trying!
(sorry for my english)

iratxe

You need a file called DMI.COM. Create a dos boot disk and put this
file into the disk. Of course, that laptop does not have a floppy
drive so you need a usb floppy drive or put that boot disk into a
desktop machine and create a bootable cd from it. I use Nero but you
can use another program. Boot the floppy or the cd and in the comand
prompt, type: dmi/r and press the ENTER key. Information about your
laptop including serial number will be shown.
