Help, Installing 4-disc changer drives in SCSI enclosure (se |
|
|
Hello all,
I'm new to SCSI hardware (and I dont know much of the proper
terminology). I was wondering if someone could help me out.
I've posted pics online and refer to them below.
http://www.geocities.com/jwillibird/scsiproject.htm
I recently bought a 7 bay SCSI-2 enclosure that came with 7 scsi cd-rom
drives. I am trying to install some multi-disc cd changer drives into
the enclosure (Nakamichi MJ-4.8s, 4-disc changers). My main question is
about how to set the jumper pins on the back of the new CD drives (fig.
2) since they have different type of pin settings than the original
drives (fig 1).
My goal is to install these drives so that I have a total of 28 drives
recognized by Windows (XP home). Ideally, I'd like to be able to load
28 music cd's at a time and rip them to .mp3 in batches of 28. I
already have the software called riptastic that is capable of this as
long as each of the drives are recognized by windows with a letter (D:
E: F: G: H: ..... etc. )
I tested the enclosure with the single cd-rom drives first, and it
worked perfectly, Windows recognized 7 drives.
The original drives' jumper pins were set up as pictured in my
drawing (fig. 3), The arrow is pointing to where the "scsi id
indicator thing" cables are attached. The "scsi id indicator
thing" has cables running from the back of the enclosure and are
labeled 0-6.
I've tried a few different ways of setting the new drives, but
windows can't recognize them, and it just keeps trying unsuccessfully
to install them until I shut down the process manually or restart
windows.
Can anyone help?
How should I set the jumpers on the new drives?
Do I have to use the "scsi id indicator thing", or can I just
manually set the SCSI Id?
Thanks you very much for any help!!!!!!

Isn't Windows still limited to drive letters A-Z (with A, B, and
C, usually reserved for floppy disk(s) and boot drive)? Like, 23
left for you?

The ID switches are provided as a convenience, but if they are a
hassle for you, you can just manually jumper each drive to the SCSI
ID you want. After all, you're probably not going to be changing
drive IDs frequently (probably not at all, from your description).

Thanks Ken for the reply about the ID jumpers and switches. But what
about the other jumpers? (see fig 2 @
http://www.geocities.com/jwillibird/scsiproject.htm). How should I set
them? (ie. reserved, sync mode, parity, 512 block size, termination?)
Please advise,
Thanks,

Reserved - Leave empty, it's reserved by the manufacturer for
who-knows-what.
Sync mode - Leave empty. Disabling sync mode makes the drive communicate
slower on the SCSI bus
512-byte - Leave empty. Only important if you want to boot something like a
SUN Sparcstation from it
Termination - If it's physically the last device on the bus, enable it.
