Dropped laptop now it's sluggish |
|
|
Not only is it sluggish but also sometimes after starting it up the Taskbar
is missing.
Sometimes it won't go past the Welcome Screen.
I was wandering if it could possibly be the hard drive.
I have already replaced the motherboard.
Suggestions?
Thanks for any help

You didn't say what OS you're running, but I'll assume Windows XP...
I don't know what kind of logging Windows does for disk errors, but
if things are actually missing at startup, there should be
->something in the log.
If you can get the thing running, select "My Computer", "Manage",
"Event Viewer". Look in the Application and System logs to see if
there are any entries that give you a hint.
It does sound like you've introduced some hard errors on your disk.

I'd try a low-level hard disk daignostic from the (drive)
manufacturer's Website, followed by a Windows Scandisk with both
options checked to see if it finds any problems or gets any better.
Note that Scandisk may repair some errors but not report that any were
found, it' worth running anyway, IMHO.
Also try a tool like HDTune (from hdtune.com) to see what your
interface speed is. If it's not very high you could have an interface
or driver problem... |

Hi,
Thanks for telling me about HDTune. Had no idea.
I did the Benchmark scan and am now doing the Error Scan right now.
It's coming out with some red squares.
What does that mean?
So far I've gotten two. I believe there may be more to come.
My OS is Win XP Home.
The laptop is Asus and I believe it has a Toshiba MK 4024gas 40gb hard
drive. At least that's what's showing in the HDTune window.
Thanks

It's a great program, and can point out a number of drive problems.
For instance, any speed glitches in a consistent place can indicate
bad sectors that have been swapped with spares at the end of the
drive.

I wouldn't worry about the benchmark, just the Supported and Active
interface speed in the Info tab.

It means you have hard disk errors, which is not unexpected if you
dropped it hard enough to have to replace the motherboard. Even if
you repair the errors, you may find that you get more in the future,
which could be as bad as catastrophic failure in the very near future.

Unfortunately, Toshiba doesn't have any low-level diags. You can try
the Windows Scandisk thing, but I'd replace the drive... |

Just means that the HD has some bad sectors, which is ***probably*** not |
a big deal but a reason to see if any others develop. Any way, this has
nothing to do with the sluggishness of your machine. Did you check in MS
Config if anything special is going on and in Task Manager, Processes,
what processes are abnormally using CPU time ?

I just wanted to tell everyone in case you have the same problem that
replacing the hard drive fixed the problem.
Thanks everyone for your help.
