I had this running fine on my win 2k system.

Went to use it again after a couple of weeks and it gives me
'Unable to open TWAIN source' error.

I've emailed Canon and also talked to them on the phone. They have
told me to reinstall multiple times and check for stuff running, but
I've followed their advice and really received nothing from them that
will make my scanner work.

The scanner works on another win2k computer but not this one.

The HP digital camera and HP printer never stopped working.

Picasa2 is just one of the software packages I've installed lately
but don't really know what was installed between the times it worked
and didn't work.

I've noticed several other Canon users having the same TWAIN error.

I am very disappointed in Canon's knowledge of how to make their
systems work with TWAIN or to properly troubleshoot TWAIN errors.

The control panel scanners and printer icon always shows the scanner
is working, but when I try to access the scanner from any program, it
gives the 'Unable to open TWAIN source' error.

Disconnect the scanner (USB).

Did they tell you to remove the software, Reboot, then re-install the
software.
After the software is installed, then plug in and turn on the scanner.

Also is your USB and Windows 2K updated from Microsoft?

going off the information in your post, I'd start by checking a couple
things...

1. Make sure Device Manager recognises the scanner as an Imaging Device
as well as the Product ID ( make/model)

if it's seen properly then try:

1. rt mouse click on My Computer and select Manage
2. on the left side of computer managment, select: Application and
Services | Services
3. in the right window double click on Still Image Service

verify your Still Image Service is both started and automatic.

If both look good then try checking your sti_trace log file or send it
to cannon support for evaluation.

hope it helps...

I am having exactly the same trouble with my Canoscan 1250U2

Canons help desk have now got me up to 6 HelpID numbers on their nex
to useless Help Desk system where if one of their responses does no
work you have to go through it all again. Even worse, if they as
you a question, the only way you can respond is by raising ye
another help request

Canons equipment is mostly good. But I will never ever buy or recomen
one of their products again; basically because if you are unlocky an
have probems, their help desk is absolutly useless

I am now waiting for one last response before I give up, throw th
scanner into a dustbin and buy one that has a TWAIN driver tha
works. :angry
