I've been using Nero 5.xx for quite a while now but due to dual layer
DVD burners coming out I was finally able to get a good deal on a
Plextor 712A so I bought it. I'll worry about dual layer when I need
one. Mostly I burn audio discs and backup lots of stuff to DVD. I
don't deal much with movies.

I don't know how other DVD drives work, but the 712A can decide what
speeds to burn media (varying it as it goes through). I assume other
drives do also, but the 712A comes with Roxio 6 basic which has a
setting for it and Nero doesn't. So I gave it a try. I don't know if
Nero is supporting that. Other things on Roxio seem to be mated to the
Plextor so I lean toward using it.

One thing about Nero that drives me nuts is having to zero out the gap
on DAO audio discs each and every time and Roxio is certainly better
at that. And worse at everything else.

The Roxio software doesn't default to the last thing I used it for; I
have to pick Music CD and then real music cd (not MP3) each time I
start it up. The text boxes for text on CD, title and name, don't
default to blank or even highlight the text when you enter them to
make it easy to replace.

The software automatically sets the source to the just burned audio
disc, which means that I keep having to set it back to where I want
the next one to come from. Often I'm burning a concert that takes
three CDs, so after each one I want the default file location to stay
the same, not the CD I just burned.

Incredibly, Roxio empties the clipboard while burning a CD. I know
this because I routinely copy the Title CD text to the clipboard so I
can just paste it into the next CD. That works fine with Nero but
there is nothing to paste with Roxio. So it is emptying the clipboard.
Why on earth would it do that?

Maybe there are settings to fix some of this but I can't find
anything. Any help greatly appreciated. In summary, does Nero (even
version 6) support the variable speed writing, or is there some fix or
upgrade to Roxio that fixes these really sloppy "features"?

I would qualify for that rebate but it's still pretty expensive. I
wonder if it solves all the problems or whether Nero 6 has the burn
speed variation stuff. I've come across more stuff about Roxio that I
don't like. I can't seem to find a way to burn a DVD if I'm given the
files that go into the TS_VIDEO directory. I guess I can just burn it
as a data cd and make the directory on my own but that is a PITA. Also
I didn't see a way to burn an SVCD. It must be there somewhere.

When I got my CD-RW, it came with EZCD 5.X, I found that to be
unsatisfactory.
I also purchased Nero 5, whuch worked better, for mem than EZCD 5.X/

However, BOTH gave me BSOD.
I had never had a BSOD until I had CD recording software.
Both products, IMHO, were crap.

I continued to use Nero 5/InCD 3.
Then Nero 6 and InCD 4 came along.
Nero 6 was a big improvement over Nero 5, but still had problems.
InCD 4 has an improvement over InCD 3, but still had major problems AND,
caused the following problem.

With InCD 3, there was a version of Ahead's EasyWrite Reader that supported
ny CD-ROM drive.
The version of EasyWrite Reader that was for InCD 4 did NOT suport my CD-ROM
drive. Ahead screwed up by not including support for the drive.
For a time, I was able to use the the earlier version of EWR with InCD 4,
but at some point, a new relese of InCD 4 caused the earlier version of EWR
to not work. At that point (Feb 2004), I gave up on Nero/InCD and got EMC 7.

EMC 7 has worked for me.
Of course it has bugs.

To be fair, it appears that eventually Ahead got its act together and
released a replacement for EWR called InCD Reader, which does appear to
support my CD-ROM drive.

I have a multiboot system, with EMC 7 on my main system and Nero on another
system, so I do not really use Nero/InCD and cannot judge its current
status.

The after rebate price of less than $60 for EMC 7 is a bargain.
The best you can do is try both EMC 7 and Nero 6?inCD to see what works.

Nero does have a downloadable demo, don't know about EMC.
I don't ever use demos, but that's your call.

The OEM version that you have is a watered down/crippled version. It is
always better to have the retail version.
If you cannot affort the cost, that's another matter, but you really should
get a retail version.

I also bought Nero5. I think it is great and my one problem with it is
having to zero out the between-track gap each time. That is my one
complaint. In fact, I never upgraded to 6 because 5 works so well. I
understand that the express version of Nero actually does
automatically zero out that gap. I'm pretty sure that version 6, at
least the express version, will work fine.

I never use the packet writing stuff like In/CD. I've simply hear too
much bad stuff about not being able to read the things when you need
them. I simply burn data discs when I need to back up something.

The only thing that keeps me from just getting Nero 6 is not knowing
whether it supports the Plextor drives ability to vary burn speeds. I
think I need another thread for this.

Plextor's tech support can likely tell you. Try calling them.
Also send email to Ahead's "support".

That's funny. I did try to get support from Ahead when I was trying to

figure out how to stop Nero from butchering filenames. I finally found
the answer here but never heard from Ahead.

That's why I quoted "support".
Best place for support on Ahead software is in the forum at
