Nero version confusion? |
|
|
When I saw this page
http://www.nero.com/nero6/eng/nero-up.php
I impulsively decided to update my OEM package 6.6.0.13 to 6.6.6.016
But although the file name there is Nero-6.6.0.16.exe, the file that
actually downloads is Nero-7.6.0.16.exe
I installed it (and the other 3 setup programs from that page), and it
was a mess. Nero Express didn't burn, Nero Show Time played very
slowly and jerkily, etc. I've uninstalled but reckon I still have
residual problems.
What version is this please - 6 or 7? Is there a good version newer
than my 6.6.0.13 please?
And any basic pointers on how to get back to stability would be much
appreciated please. I took a registry copy directly before that major
update, but restoring it has not got me back to a sweetly running Nero
package.

There is no such version as 7.6.0.16 Nor would it install and run if there
was, unless you have a license serial for version 7.

Terry - It's been a while since I've updated. I am a firm believer in,[/quote]
"If it ain't broke don't fix it." Nevertheless, I recall seeing some
kind of cautionary statement about the update files not working with OEM
versions. I could be wrong but I think that they are only for
downloaded retail and shrink wrap products.

Did you look at the page link I gave?
If you do, you'll see the setup (1 of 4), described as an update, not
an upgrade - I do understand that distinction.
And if you care to try it, you'll see that you'll initially get the
familiar message 'You have chosen to open Nero-6.6.0.16.exe'. But as
soon as the downloading starts a message appears 'Downloading
Nero-7.6.0.16.exe'. And that's what ends up in your download folder.
I've just tried it again this morning, with the same result I saw last
night.
Also, since the original download, I've discovered another source of
'Nero-6.6.0.16.exe', and it is exactly the same size as
'Nero-7.6.0.16.exe' that I have: 34235626 bytes.
So I conclude it's a naming slip, albeit a potentially confusing one.
Given my desperation at the erratic results I described, I was ready
to believe it was the completely wrong setup file...

I'm quite familiar with Nero downloads. Just for fun I just went and
downloaded 6.6.0.16, and that's what I got.

(Appears Ahead site went thru some changes yet again. You might have
been caught in the middle of changes for the forthcoming Ver.7.)
Run Nero CleanTool to uninstall and clean out Nero:
http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/enu/General_CleanTool.html
(Delete \Program Files\Ahead directory if it's still there.) |

As did I.
It appears that OP has journeyed to the future. I request that he bring
back a Wall Street Journal for me.

Incorrect. It's your serial number that determines what you get from the
program files. The same download is for OEM, Nero Express version, trial
versions and full retail.
I suspect that the OP either has a bad serial number or some 3rd party
download manager is corrupting the download. |

Thanks. If so, that would be very disappointing if applicable to *all*
the basic programs, like Nero Express and Show Time. Maybe just an
issue for the more advanced stuff, like Recode?
But I'm just guessing. Perhaps someone can give us a definitive
position?

I assume they quickly fixed whatever mistake caused that quirk. The
message I *now* see as soon as the downloading starts is what it
should be, rather than as it was last night and again this morning:
