r/w cd failure |
|
|
Can anyone shed some light with a new problem for me?
Using Nero 5.5.1.8. W98se. No previous problems. Teac r/writer (cd).
Trying out some new CD-RWs. Nero reports 702mb free on disc (new, unused).
But I can't burn successfully, tried simulation - same problem, slowed down
right down to x1 and same problem. Never seen this error before:-
"SCSI Target error" logged. What could be causing this?
- just trying to write a couple of files to see if the domestic player can
read them okay (reads my other cd-rw discs fine).
Saved the log report, below (I don't profess to understand much of it at
all - normally works fine.)

Teac CD W54E is a 4x Rewriter. It does not support cd-rw with
"HighSpeed" or "UltraSpeed" marking. That could be the reason "CD type
reading failed" message below. Make sure you use cd-rw with markings
like: "1x-4x", "2x-4x", "MultiSpeed", or no marking (2x only).

Many thanks. Nail on the head, I believe.
I bought them for a 4x writer but on checking, CDRI reports them as 4x-8x.
- I tried erasing one but now nero says it isn't even a re-writtable? !
Can I fool Nero/the Teac easily?
Ought I keep them for when I get a real writer or return them?
Is this update needed (above)?

The Teac doen't know how to write to "4x-8x" cd-rw. The writing
strategy at 4x of "4x-8x" is different from that of "1x-4x". (Also PCA
locations are different.)
| Quote: | - I tried erasing one but now nero says it isn't even a re-writtable? !
|
Good thing Nero tried to read the ATIP that gives the information about
the disc. Had Nero not done so and erase the disc, you would have a
coaster.
| Quote: | Can I fool Nero/the Teac easily?
|
Even if that's possible, that's the last thing you want. (See above.)
The Teac should have rejected the cd-rw. (See below.)
| Quote: | Ought I keep them for when I get a real writer or return them?
|
No. CD's have a shelf life of 5-10 years. Try to exchange them with
CD-RW with no marking, "1x-4x", "2x-4x" or "MultiSpeed" written on them.

Nero 5.5.10.56 is the last Nero 5. Might as well get it just in case you
get a DVD burner.

Most likely, you are using the wrong media.
If it's UltraSpeed, it wants discs in similarly marked

similarly marked packages, rated 4x and above.

Erasable media have proved unreliable. In addition if you have a
HighSpeed drive (rated above 4x), you should not use media rated
for a maximum of 4x of less; they are not HighSpeed. You may get
apparently good results, but the error rate is likely to be high
and reliability will be low.

Yes and no. Your drive may or may not write to media of a lesser
type than specified, but the quality of the write is generally
much less than that for the specified type, which is often less
than you'd want to begin with. I did not say that it would not
work, only that "you're asking for trouble".
Double-check your data, though. There may be an UltraSpeed drive
which will write as slowly as 4x, but I don't know of it.

To top it all, now the CDs have been in a different machine with a faster
burner they were reported to have nero ask 'record at x4 or x10'?
Apparently x4 failed but x10 went okay, and multi-sessioned okay too.
Nero upgrade download - now to try it out. |

burner they were reported to have nero ask 'record at x4 or x10'?
Apparently x4 failed but x10 went okay, and multi-sessioned okay too.
Nero upgrade download - now to try it out.

Sounds like you have bought high speed rewrite media for a older burner. If
your max burning speed for rewrites is 4 speed and you try to burn 10 speed
media it probably will not work. The solution is to buy 4 speed rewrite
media. |
