IBM 73LZX firmware upgrade question. |
|
|
Hello folks,
I have a question about firmware upgrading IBM/HITACHI SCSI drives.
I have 2 73LZX drives made in 2002 they both make this noise (saving logs
or something) every minute or so. But on of the drives is really loud and
and makes the noise regardless of the activity exactly every 60 seconds.
I am aware of the FAQ entry found on HITACHI site
http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/qcheck.htm#a4. I found firwmare
http://techsupport.services.ibm.com/server/mdownload2/73lzx.html
upgrade to one of the drives from initial S5BS firmware to S5DE which in
the release notes says that it should reduce the noise the drive makes.
Now onto the question, i have contacted HITACHI in hopes to obtain the
updated firmware but was told that my drive (after giving them the serial)
was a GARS drive whatever that means and that was it. I also tried to use
2 tools to try flashing the drive but codeupdt lists my drive as UNKNOWN
on ID6 and the option to select firmware file to upgrade is blanked.
Next i tried to use scsitool which correctly finds and recognizes my IBM
drive but any attempt to load the firmware results in a message saying
UNABLE TO ALLOCTE XXXXXXXXX bytes which i guess pertains to the size of
the firmware file. Is there anyone on this group that has successfully
upgraded their IBM drive firmware in a regular desktop machine? I would
greatly apprecite any help and or the firmware update tool if anyone would
be kind to send it my way. The drives are attached to AHA-2940U2W and
AHA-21960 controllers from Adaptec. Thank you. |

The likely thing is that the drive has OEM firmware on it, which means |
you probably just don't have the right firmware image since my
assumption is that you got it from their website. Hitachi is legally
obligated to NOT provide OEM firmware.
Were the disks purchased retail, or did you inherit them from
something like a Sun computer, or a RAID subsystem, or an RS/6000?
Our company, like others, has software that can flash firmware on any
make/model of SCSI or FC disk, but you need to understand that you
just can't get any firmware image for any 73LZX and expect the drive
to accept it.
As the scsitool people what the error messsage indicates. If a disk
rejects flashing firmware, you get something completely different,
this may be a simple problem that you would get if the firmware image
is just too large or incorrect.

Probably not.
If this was just a generic process then there is no need for codeupdt to disable
the flash option for drives it doesn't know about and SCSITool's option would
work on other drives than Seagate's (for which it was developed).

Ask the scsitool people what the error messsage indicates. If a disk

I think the 9gb drive comes from some kind of rs6000 system or AIX server
but i am not sure since i bought it from someone on one of the forums. It
came in sealed bag with IBM's label and from what i was told it was brand
new disk.
The other drive came stright from Hitachi RMA and under their label it has
ULTRASTAR XP which i guess might come from IBM's P series servers.
Both drives are identified as IC35Lxxxx drives which i guess it
denotes 73LZX family.

Currently i use the 9gb drive which i wanted to flush on FreeBSD but
there's no such tool that does it unless camcontrol could do it?
I am willing to try anything and even if that means i could destroy the
drive in hopes to try to lower the noise it makes. |

Nope. ULTRASTAR XP is an older drive series.

Wrong again. Your research obviously stinks.

Respectfully, you can upload the firmware from a toaster onto a SCSI
disk, but that doesn't mean the disk will accept it.
If you can not obtain confirmation from your drive vendor that you
have the appropriate file (based on your vendor/product ID strings
typically) then you run a very small risk of turning your disk into a
paperweight if you attempt to flash firmware. At very least I
wouldn't attempt this without backing up the data on the disk first.
Some firmware upgrades will initiate a media init operation (i.e.
reformat, and destroy all data). Seagate has a few firmware updates
that do this, so don't assume that a firmware update is always "safe".
If a firmware image does require a reformat, then I would hope that
will be mentioned in the release notes, so you should download and
read them.
Also, some disks will accept a volatile firmware update process, which
puts the new image in ram, and if you recycle power the old firmware
is still there. I don't know w/o doing some reading if the disk you
have accepts that method. The sofware you use to attempt the update
has to support this as well. I know our SANTOOLS software does, but I
don't know about any other packages you are looking at.
