Just picked up this drive. Seems to work okay except there are never
any messages on the LCD. LEDs, mechanics seem to work and a test
backup was okay.

This is an 8900 mfg'd for IBM. Updated it with the latest firmware as
well.

Shot?

LCD flexcable could be pinched or broken. LCD flexcable connector on the
back could be lose. The LCD does not have any influence on the actual drive
operation, so if you can't fix it, either live with it, find a replacement
LCD bezel or find a non-LCD bezel.

Rob,
Yes, you are correct again. Looks like someone tried to take the bezel
off without first disconnecting the flex cable at the drive. Ripped it
in half.

I tried calling Exabyte to see if I could get a new part. Called
service, they only handle RMAs, transferred me to tech support, they
don't deal with parts, but they transferred me to someone who would
know.....they didn't know. My last hope is email "Elizabeth."

I almost had it fixed after twidling with it for over an hour then I
dropped a blob of solder on the end connector - game over.

I would have thought this would be a relativly common part and maybe
even used on other models. I've actually replaced these types of parts
with regular ribbon cable on HP tape drives but their contacts were
further apart and I could solder right to the board.

I think I have one somewhere, originating from a defective 8900. I'll check
in the morning, but will not be able to send it until tuesday.

You can send me your address etc off-line, so I can confirm it tomorrow

Shoot an image (as high a resolution as possible) with a ruler for
size comparison and post the picture somewhere (and give a link here)
There is a chance that maybe someone here may have a similar cable.

Doubtful. The flexcircuit cables are custom made for Exabyte. This one has
bends and corners in it that make it fit exactly in the cable path of the
drive. You have a much better chance in finding a replacement bezel then
to
find another flexcable that happens to fit. It's also near impossible to
attach to the single-line LCD if you were to find anything resembling it.

I've offered Ray a complete front for the 8900. There are at least two
versions : a creme one as the standard Exabyte, and a black one with
lightblue button for IBM.

If I had to fix one of these I would probably use very thin Tefzel wire to
run each connection separately. SMD soldering experience comes in handy ;-)

I hate those cables... <g> I have only once managed to repair one of
these, all the other times were failures!

In the past I've had success bypassing the connectors and using
regular ribbon cable.
