I've got a Minolta Dimage Elite F-2900 scanner. An oldy but it's
working fine but I never liked the Minolta software that came with it.

I've grabbed Vuescan and tried it. Before I buy it is there any
product I should look at.

Thanks

I don't think so. Silverfast doesn't support it
(http://www.silverfast.com/product/Minolta/en.html)

Vuescan is pretty buggy and unreliable to start with but had
particular problems with some Minolta scanners (the infamous
"stripes"). So, make sure you test thoroughly because there's no
refund once you part with your money.

BTW, what is it specifically you don't like about Minolta software?

I don't have a Minolta but the reason I ask is that usually, the root
of the problem some people have with native programs is not the
software itself but how they use it (e.g. use it as an image editor).

Agreed as to working smart. I just want it to scan so I can put it
into PS. I've never been able to get a workflow going and the
documentation stinks. By now it's real old software. It's called DS
Elite v. 1.04 and kind of cluncky. It's a *very* annoying, unusual
gui. When I got the scanner, used, I couldn't find software updates
on the Minolta website.

A first try with Vuescan was a positive experience. I see YMMV.

Clunky, *very* annoying, unusual GUI... Sounds like you're describing
Vuescan! ;o)

Seriously though, if you plan to do the editing in Photoshop
afterwards just turn everything off in native software. You should
then be able to scan "raw" i.e. get as much data from the scanner as
possible without the scanner software "messing" with it. Once that's
done you should never have to tweak the settings again.

Try a global search on Google, just in case. I often find software
like that hidden in some directory which can't be arrived at if you
navigate the site. Manufacturers often remove the link when the
hardware becomes obsolete but leave the files on the FTP server. The
only way get to it then is with a deep link. Well, it's worth a try...

Indeed and - depending on a person's requirements - some Vuescan
"warts" may take longer to show up, or they may never show up if the
requirements are low.

Either way, there are knowledgeable Vuescan users here who are more
than willing to help. And, judging by history, you'll need a lot of
help if you decide to use Vuescan... ;o)
