How can it be done? I notice elsewhere that jpegs of 1536 x 1024 would yield the
right proportions for a 4" x 6" print without cropping at the photo kiosk. The
cropping tool at the kiosks will not allow me to not crop the picture and put in
a quarter inch margin on each end of the photo. Irfanview would let me print
that way, but I prefer the water resistant printing results I get from a certain
Wal-Mart kiosk.

So how do I resize, resample, or otherwise manipulate copies of the photos I
intend to use (burned to a CD), so I can use the kiosk printing station and not
crop any of the photos?

Change the image property and add some pixels to the sides or
top/bottom so the image fits 3:2 ratio used for photo. Since your
image is 1024x768, which is 4:3 you need to add some to 1024 end,
making the picture longer (or taller depending on orientation) so the
resulting image is 1152x768.

Fortunately this can be done with Microsoft Paint by using Attributes
under Image menu. Remember to re-center the image after you changed
the image size.

You'll distort the image with this procedure. It enlarges the image in width, but not
height. Only use the method if you don't mind the distortion. It is best to crop to the
proper length/width ratio for the print.

No, it will not distort the picture - "adding to the 1024 end" in
this contex is like adding a border, but only for the left+right or
top+bottom parts depending on orientation.
The the whole (4:3 ratio) picture will the fit the 3:2 paper -
it has not been stretched, just had a border made around it on two
sides.

Thanks.

However, I am stumped at how to recenter the image within Paint. How is that
done?

I figure 64 pixels of white should be added to each end, but I wound up with 128
pixels of white on the right side of the picture.
1152 - 128 = 1024

1152 / 128 = 9
768 / 128 = 6
So that gives me a 9:6 ratio, or 3:2, or 6:4, or 4:6 with a rotate.

1152 / 6 = 192
768 / 4 = 192
So I use a multiple of 192 pixels to figure out my inches. (192 pixels per
printed inch).

So what pixels per inch does the Wal-Mart store typically use in its kiosk? The
kiosk computer just automatically figures that out and works with it?

I think the easiest way would be to first expand the image by 64
instead of full 128. That will add the white space on the right side.
Move the image to the right so you have 64 pixels of white space on
the left side. Then add another 64 pixels, it'll be on the right
side. Extra steps but usually perfectly centered this way.

It varies with the actual image size. They print in 4x6 so if you
have 1152x768 it'll be 192 pixel per inch.

My camera takes 5 megapix, 2592x1728 max in 3:2 ratio setting. With
4x6 I got 432 pixels per inch. I don't know what the max resolution
they support but I'm sure it's more than that. Maybe 1200 or even
2400 per inch. Anyone else knows?

If someone used a cheap camera with QVGA res (320x240) and print that
on 4x6 they will get 60 dpi which is a step below that of a standard
dot matrix printers. Rather ugly image though.

(This is not working for me yet. How do I get the 64 pixels from the right side
to the left side? I don't even see a ruler in Paint.)

You could add the extra pixels, then go to Image/Rotate 180 degrees and add
pixels again.

My misunderstanding. But how does Walmart handle a picture file with the wrong
length/width ratio? Does it crop, or leave a whie space? When I rpint at home (usually
from Paint Shop Pro), a white space is left, and I can control where it will be.

When I rpint at home (usually from Paint Shop Pro), a white space is

There is a crop feature on the kiosk computer. It gives you a rectangle of what
part of the photo image will fit on the selected size of paper. You can move the
rectangle up or down by a notch or two or three to include or exclude preferred
portions of the image area. I cannot get the machine to give me white space. It
damages the original intent of the photographer by cropping in my case, but some
scanned images of off sizes could use this little help I'm getting here to make
the FULL image available for printing at the kiosk.

If I was making 5 x 7's, I'd have to recompute what size resolution I should
create in Paint. Basically, I've never found a use for Paint until now. Thank
you.

Coming late to the party. If you have photoshop you do this by
manipulating "Canvas Size" Not "Image Size"

Then the original image can be moved around using the selection tool on
the new canvas size.

And if you're not using photoshop you can use the GIMP to do the same thing.
