Hi,
Used Nero 6 and compiled a data CD at home on a Plextor 16/10/40 cd
writer. Data mode used was Mode 2/XA. Data was burned successfully with
buffer uderrun being avoided 184 times!
CD then used at work in a different machine to copy all files to hard
drive and it took about 30 minutes to copy the files!
Does anyone have any ideas why it should take so long to copy these
files (458MB total)?
How many files? THe number of files make a huge diffeence.?

922 files ... various types (xls, doc, dat, jpg etc)

It's a few years old by the looks of it. Will try on another PC.
I burn all my CDRs at half the max burner speed, both because it makes
them more compatible with older readers and because they last longer.
Yes, I dropped from 16x to 8x and all seemed fine until I used Nero's CD
Speed tool and it gave me 0.32% damaged.

The Plextor 16X writer worked at full speed in my old 200MHz Pentium
machine so it should work at full speed in yours. This was an early
Burnproof recorder so it is possible that the gaps when Burnproof is
invoked are larger than on newer recorders.
You may actually have two issues here - 1. the PC is incorrectly
configured and cannot supply data quicly enough to the drive and 2. the
drive is incompatible with the blank CD's that you are using. To solve
the second issue you should make sure that you are using the most up to
date firmware and try different blank CD manufacturers. Do you have a
copy of Plextools? Plextools will give you information about who really
makes your blank CD's and also supports basic CD testing with your
drive.
Cheers.

Thanks for the info James.
I do have a copy of Plextools so I will have a look at that tonight.
Thanks.

Should I try writing another disk at a lower write speed again?
Thanks.

I suspect that a still lower speed won't help. Try another line of
blanks, perhaps a quality line such as T-Y or Mitsui; failing those, TDK
is still highly regarded. Once you know you can get high-quality results
reliably, it's reasonable to look for more accessible, lower-cost media
which serve your needs.

OK, thanks for that Mike. Will try a different manufacture.

I think you will find copying 922 which occupy (say) 458
meg will take a lot longer than one 458meg file. There is a big
over head in locating the files and an over head for creating
the new file which is to be copied too.
Now long does the same volume of data take iti in half a dozen files?
