Newbie problem SCSI-2 . |
|
|
I bought an external 50 Gb Sun SCSI HD, model 411.
It has 2 connectors, 50 pins each.
Seller says this is SCSI-2 narrow.
Whatever I search on the intenet, I cannot find what is SCSI-2 " narrow ".
Since I must buy a SCSI>PCI interface card for my computer, I wonder
which SCISI>PCI adapter card will work.
Does ANY SCSI-2 > PCI adapter card will work ? ( Regardless if it is
SCSI-2 narrow or wide ?
Or should I search for a specific SCSI-2 " narrow " PCI interface card ?
Or does " narrow " just mean it is not " wide " ?
Is the SCSI-2 " narrow " then the same as a SCSI-2 " fast " ( contrary
to " wide " ) ?
You see, I am pretty confused which SCSI-2>PCI interface card I should
buy for my computer.
Please help me out.
Thanks for any comment / advice.

'Narrow' and 'Wide' refer to the data path width of the SCSI bus.
Narrow is 8-bit, using a 50-pin connector, and Wide is 16-bit, using a
68-pin connector.
If your drive truly is 'narrow' (and I have trouble believing that
a drive of 50gigs capacity is anything but Wide, but I could be wrong),
then 'narrow' simply refers to the fact that it uses a 50-pin connector.

Tekram makes some nice cards, and their support policies are
certainly better than Adaptec.

It should, with the appropriate adapter if all it has is a 'Wide'
external connection. Keep in mind that you will also need a terminator
for the second plug.
Also, I would take a much closer look at that hard drive (open the
enclosure if you have to), and post the actual drive manufacturer name
and model number. Sun did not make their own hard drives. They usually
contracted with Seagate to make drives for them with Sun's name on the
label and their firmware in the EEPROM.
Happy hunting.

The labels say : " Sun Microsystems , model 411 , PN 595-2262-01 SN
245G1568 ".
I couldn't open up the device as yet.
I'll try to ( not very simple ) and post furthermore what I find.
Part of the confusing internet info I found on " Sun, model 411 " talks
about a CDR reader, but it isn't.
For another part, the internet info does say indeed this is an external
HDD ( what it is indeed...).
But no info whatsoever on the type of SCSI bus.
Thanks,

It's the Sun 411 case that is SCSI-2 narrow.
The drive is likely ST-150176LW/LC, wide SCSI-3.
At the minimum you want a ultra narrow PCI card with active terminator.
If the drive is LC, a ultra2 card with LVD terminator would be better.
You could also use the drive internally on an AHA-2940U2W.

terminators aren't necassary on this enclosure as it has auto-sensing
termination built in
