Need Recommendation: Cheap digicam w/movie with sound |
|
|
I'm looking for the lowest priced decent digital camera that will
record movies with audio.
By decent, I mean name brand and at least 3 MP. Thanks! |

that depends on what quality movies you want. Most cheapest ones record in
low quality, low fpm rate, like 320x240 at 15 fps. If you want better,
maybe you could get a look on old Canon S1, which is going out and could be
obtained cheap. Big zoom, moveis 640x480 at 30 fps - that's practically
almost digital movie camera quality... |

I second that pick. It's hard to find one cheaper with imagine |
stabilization and the ability to zoom in and out while shooting. The
down side is (no matter what make digital camera) it eats up gobs of
memory and it must be fast memory so as not be buffer limited. |

Fortunately, gobs of memory can be gotten today. :)
I recently got a Dimage Z5 which does 640x480x30fps. I am impressed
with it as a video camera. My 512Mb card will record about 13 minutes.
You can get at least 2Gb so that is good for almost an hour. Batteries
might limit you from shooting that much continuously.
Be advised though, while the video is good I've found the microphone is
rather limited. In good conditions it does well enough. But in one
clip I shot I didn't really notice it was windy until I played back the
clip where I could here a lot of wind noise. And the mic is near the
shutter so it's easy to either block the mic or increase the wind noise
just by producing turbulence near the mic.
Sure beats the pants off my old Olympus and it's 15 second clips, no
sound at all.

Note that S1 doesn't have that long time for movies---about 8 minutes on 1 G
card. It saves it in motion jpg mode, though, which is among most quality
mode available.
Which format Minolta uses? It must be some kind of compression...? |

It's QuickTime, I don't see any other info than that. It's around 1Mb/S.

Fast memory is not cheap. 60x is the min required speed for most digital
cameras shooting at 30fps 640 x480 fine quality setting with being
limited by the buffer.

According to the published specs on your camera, 640 x 480 at 30fps,
fine quality, requires 1500kb/s. That means you get less than 6 minutes
out of a 512 card.

The 2Gb should be good for about 1/2 hour.

that's close. S1 has around 1.3- - 1.4 M per sec...old S1 had two
compression settings for movie, while new S2 hasn't, so only options are 15
or 30 fps and 640x480, or 320x240.
But, for details in mode you must get some program like GSpot - it tells you
in detail codec, compression and audio type. Nice stuff. My movies are only
avi type, so without this program i wouldn't know that type is motion jpeg. |

I think your best best is a used Fuji S602 Zoom. Great digital camera
(see reviews at Steve's digicams, etc.). It is 3MP with interop.
that generates 6MP images. Video is full 30fps, no limit on length.
In the current MP craze, it has since been replaced by a newer model
7MP version, so you can pick up the 3MP one at a decent price, and
you've got yourself a top-notch camera with great optics and Super
CCD. The 3MP/6MP will do you fine unless you're printing door-sized
posters.
