i wouldn't get near cheapest ones, if i were you. Why do you think they are
cheap? Because they are worthed next to nothing. Same as SmartBuy
CDR's---they usually go useless a few months after burning, if you 're
lucky. If not, they can become wasted a few days after burning... |

Do you have any evidence to show the 'cheap' dual layer disks are, as |
you say, 'worthless'. If you do, please share it with us or is your
comment so much hot air. |

The current issue (Oct 18) of PC Magazine, which arrived in my mail box
Friday, has an interesting column devoted to torture tests of several
cheap DVD recordables. It's online at
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1862189,00.asp
Interesting reading.

you don't have to see evidence of each and every sort of new disc to know
this fact. CDR's are worthless if they are of cheapest type, DVD's are also
same, i don't really see why it would be different in dual layer DVD
situation, since the cheapest type are same manufacturer, same dye only in
two layers. Note that DVD's are in general more vunerable to scratches,
low-quality dye etc....than CDR's, so here is only more to be carefull,
since if you have CDR , you can loose only about 700M, while in dual layer
DVD case you can loose whooopsy 8G (a bit more)...that's so much data that
i'd be really very carefull in choosing disc type.
But, do as you wish, just don't come back here after a couple of months with
a question of a sort: suddenly my DVD refuses to be recognized by
windows...etc..what to do..", since then i'll have to answer "i told you
so"... there are a lot of similar questions here regarding Packet data
writing (UDF---as InCD, DirectCD etc)... to CDRW's...there were tons of
posts saying that this is not advisble to use, it's very unreliable, it
happens that suddenly such CDRW is not readable anymore, etc...but there are
still a lot of wiseguys who think that all this can't happen to them, they
use this system and every now and then come here with above question. When
you ask them to get bakup copy, they usually say that this was only copy
they have...what a stupidity... |

I've been burning CDRs and DVDRs for some time now. I haven't noticed any
relation between the price and the performance. The only general rule I
follow is to avoid cyanine (light blue) dyes. They don't seem to handle
heat as well as phthalocyanine dyes (light straw to clear.)
