HI
I am thinking about buying a DVD-RAM capable DVD Burner. Is any special
software needed to use it. Can i just drag and drop files w/o software
like DirectCD or inCD?

TIA

RAM needs to be formatted to UDF or FAT32. UDF is widely preferred for
speed. InCD or DirectCD can do this, but they are both often problematic.
There's a Panasonic RAM driver that's more stable, and can be used with any
burner that supports RAM.
You can get it here:

UDF 2.0 format is needed for discs that will be used on a set-top RAM video
burner. UDF 1.5 is generally used for PC -only data discs.

WinXP will, so I'm told, format a RAM disc with Fat32, but this has been
problematic for lots of folks.

Winxp has native support for DVD-RAM and will format in FAT32. (Some
discs are supposed to be pre-formatted in FAT32.) For versatility and
speed to format in UDF, you need InCD that's bundled with LG drives.

LG GSA-4163B, GSA-4165B, GSA 4167B:

SHould I be bothered with support for DVDRAM or DVDRW
when buying a DVD writer?

RAM is superior to RW in every way...
Only the LG burners support it...

The following 37 drives support DVD+-RW and DVD-RAM.
Note that no Pioneer drive is listed:
