The break point between HighSpeed and standard discs is at 4x,
which both nominally support. However, even at 4x writing to
the wrong kind of disc greatly increases error rate

one for low speed media and one for high speed media.)

That is not correct.
A recorder designated "High Speed" on the logo is designed
to take only "High Speed" media when erasables are being used.
Some will record adequately on 1x-4x blanks, but results are
inconsistent, erasure is usually difficult and
error rates are high.

Erasable CDs (CD-RW) are much more likely to 'forget' over time
than write-once media. The higher the rated speed and the more
often erased, the shorter the disc's life in my experience, but
only the original blanks (writable only at 2x - no higher, no lower)
were free of increase in error rate during months of storage.

It is not wise to use erasable media except for test.
They tend to have higher error rates and to be unreliable.

Do you ever see any C1 errors with CDSpeed on your machines?
I recall having seen C1 errors on earlier versions of CDSpeed,
but I have run tests on several faulty discs on a number of drives
and can find no C1 errors any longer.
Perhaps the program has changed;
perhaps my drives (Plextor and Pioneer) are to blame.
Unfortunately, I'm not running Plextools and therefore have no further
information to offer.

Perhaps the Plextor used to pull the C1 errors out of thin air?
Perhaps CDSpeed used to pull the C1 errors out of thin air?
Perhaps Plextools used to pull the C1 errors out of thin air?
Anyhow, how would you get the C1 errors when you don't even have
a drive reporting the C1 errors?
Perhaps you used to dig the C1 errors out of your assholes, Mikey?

Erasable media are forgetful and unreliable at best.
Using the wrong class of medium will produce higher error rates

Modern erasables must have values in the ATIP or they default
to 2x only. Your mastering software will allow you to write at
the permitted speeds of which it is capable.
That is a problem at 4x and if that is the only permitted speed
you are likely to have a HighSpeed drive faced with unspecified
media or vice versa; in that case, the write is possible but will
probably have a high error rate.
