Here's my problem: When I start to burn a DVD using Nero 6.3.0.3 and a
Plextor 712A the burn starts out like normal. The "Used Read Buffer"
goes to 100%. It writes the "lead in" but when it starts track writing
the "buffer Level" [ in the second window down ] start cycling between
92-20% more or less and continues throughout the track burning process.
I get a complete burn but it takes way long to do a 4.x GB movie. About
28 minutes using 8X media. It should be more like 7-8 minutes..

I have already uninstalled Nero and reinstalled it and also removed
and reinstalled the Plextor burner. I have "plenty" of HDD space so
that should not be it. The burner was working properly before this started.
I'm using Windows XP on a 3.0GHz, 1 GB Memory system..

Does anyone know why this buffer is cycling up and down, AND, what do
you suggest I might do about it.

TIA

Chuck

First forget about the buffer it work well and second check the media you
are writing to to make sure they burn at 8x

Yes, this is good 8x media - works on my other computer. And I think

I've fixed my problem.
The Plaxtor needed a firmware up date to "recognize" this 8x media.
Burn still seems to take longer than it should though. I've a Plextor
708A in another system and it will burn a 4.+ GB movies onto 4x DVD
media in the same time this Plextor 712A uses to burn the same movie
onto 8x media.. But, at least I'm not getting cycles in the buffer any
more but still slow as far as I can tell..

Thanks for your input.

Dunno - but why not apply Nero updates anyway? 6.6.x.x at the moment..

The buffer cycles down to zero, buffer underrun protection kicks in and
the writer stops while the buffer refills. You're writing too fast for
your source; use a slower write speed or a faster source to write more
quickly. (When the drive restarts and relocates to continue, writing is
sloooow. When read leaves the buffer full, even at a 'lower' speed, the
write is faster overall.)
