LS,
I have a linux 2.2.20 system with an HP 1533A SCSI-2 DDS-2 drive connected
to an AHA2940UW, which operates fine. Writing and reading from the tape is
no problem.
Only the following error occurs:
antares:/home/mike# mt retension
mt: /dev/st0: Input/output error
All other options with mt work fine.
Is this a common issue? What could be the problem?
DDS tapes do not need to be retensioned, so they do not support this option.

I beg to differ ... they do here, apparently. On at least three OS with
the corresponding tar implementations (OS/2 gnutar, FreeBSD, and Tru64),
"mt retension" causes the tape to, well, retension. This worked with all
the DDS tape drives I have had so far (DDS1, 2, 3, 4) and did at least
not result in an error. Actually, I found it to be very useful when -
for what ever reason - a tape had a lot of stop-and-go and became
apparently hard to read for other DDS drives.
I/O errors like the one described I see only when a tape really is about
to beg for retirement, but then I usually have also issues writing to it
(i.e., lots of repeated writes and an impressive list of errors
corrected by the drive, which mt can read out of the SCSI mode pages).
