Hi

I picked up a pile of sca 9gb WD drives for next to nothing, to go in a pile
of scsi compaq pro 5100 stations to increase the 4gb drives fittied

I bought 4 adapters, 3 like this

SCA 80 pin to SCSI 1/2/3 68/50 Adapter Card

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=6718897682&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT

1 like this

Ultra SCSI Adapter SCA 80 to 68 Pin Best Buy!

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5135539021&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT

the ultra worked fine but the others when the power is switched on causes
smoke and burning.

Should just connecting them up cause that? i thought i had got the correct
items.

thanks

Certainly not! Those adapters must be faulty.

I always buy mine here:

http://stores.ebay.com/STSI-COM_SCA-Adapters

They are a little more expensive, but always work perfectly. I've been
very impressed at how fast they arrive in Canada - usually next day - so
shipping time to the UK should be reasonable.

took a look, the items look the same, same maker maybe. would use them next
time if/when i can afford some more. the seller i got this lot from didnt
combine shipping so cost a lot of postage

the compaqs were free and i needed the drives to make them a bit more useful
as i recycle old computers and give em to poor people and already i gave
some away with some free kids edu software.

On a slight differant point.

the 1st drive i tried with the Ultra SCSI Adapter SCA 80 to 68 gave a ID 4,
yet that wasnt what i set it too, then when i tried the next hd with the
same adapter as before it was ID5.

The compaqs come with small scsi hds as standard so added them that way.
