Posting this just in case anyone else googles for it.
System: Compaq Evo D51c with an Adaptec 2940 UW pro adapter. System
Running XP pro SP1. Hooked up an old Yamaha 4416s drive. After
rebooting the drive showed up 7 times in my device manager.
Tried all sorts of things but what put me on the right track was:

FOllowed the instructions most of the way expect that there was
already an entry for my device under:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ScsiPort\SpecialTargetList
Which I removed and recreated it.
Instead of enabling largeluns I disabled it. Just to be sure I added
OneLun with a value of 1.
After rebooting I now have a single drive in my explorer and this
works properly.
