My first frustrating experience with SCSI RAID. Please help.
I have a LSI MegaRAID 500 Express Ultra 160 SCSI RAID adapter. The
adapter has a 32 MB DIMM installed on it. I have three Seagate
ST336607LW Ultra 320 drives configured in RAID 0 array. I am using a
round Ultra 160 (five device plus terminator) cable. My stripe size is
set to 64 Kb.
Previously, I had these same drives and cable on an Adaptec 29160N (a
non-RAID adapter).
When I benchmarked these three drives on the Adaptec 29160N card using
HDTach 2.61 and Sandra 2004 I had a maximum read speed of 55 MB/S.
With these same three drives on the LSI MegaRAID 500 HDTach states a
maximum read speed of 79 MB/S which would be OK if I were using SCSI-2
drives. Sandra states a maximum read speed of 41 MB/S which is
downright horrible. The MegaRAID card is in U160 mode. All three of
the drives are in the default setting where the adapter is allowed to
select either SE or LVD. What am I missing? |

Hi:
I looked up the card and its specifications:
LSI LOGIC MegaRAID Express 500 U160 RAID. 1-Channel. (1) ext. 68-pin
VHDCI conn. (1) int. 68-pin HDCI. 32MB SDRAM. LSI LOGIC: MegaRAID
Express 500 with i960RN 100MHz RISC processor, 32-Bit PCI, 1 U160 LVD
SCSI channel, 32MB SDRAM, supoort up to 128MB SDRAM (1 module) ,
WebBIOS, browser-based RAID configuration, Microsoft NT-Cluster
support.
It may be your at the limit of the technology of the system your
employing. You may get a little increase moving up stripe size a bit.

Actually, it would only be around 15MB/s if it had been SCSI-2 drives.
