Experiences with SCSI-to-IDE/ATAPI bridges/adapters - any co |

Hi!
I am considering to discard (sell) my UltraPlex 40max and PlexWriter 124TSi
and go DVD instead. However, Plextor has not made any SCSI DVD devices
(yet). As I have been very pleased with Plextor's devices, I'm investigating
if I could use the AEC-7722 SCSI-to-ATAPI bridges together with Plextor
PX-116A DVD-ROM and PX-716A DVD ±RW.
I've searched Google Groups for everything concerning SCSI to IDE/ATAPI
bridges, products from Acard, Addonics and IOData. But most people seems to
have unsuccesfull results with the adapters, due to their OS (Windows),
controller (Adaptec) or burning software (Nero). I did find some succesfull
examples, but these persons were using Linux or OS/2, which isn't an option
for me.
My controller is a Adaptec 29160 with 3x Maxtor Atlas 10k IV HDDs connected
on the U160 chain. I plan to connect the two devices (DVD-ROM & DVD±RW) to
the UW bus on the controller. Can I expect that both devices will work
properly under Windows XP Pro SP2 (including Nero)? Will it be better to
connect the two DVD-devices to the U160 LVD chain instead? Will I disable
some functions in the two devices using these bridges?
For additional information:
www.acard.com
www.addonics.com (Addonics are using Acards chips/PCB's)
www.addonics.com
Thanks in advance

Why can't you just use the IDE ports on the mobo?!?
And if there's none (highly unlikely, but not impossible)
why can't you just add an ATA HA? It's cheaper,
simpler, and pretty much guaranteed to work....

Unless, of course, there is nowhere to put the drive. Unlike SCSI, ATA
is strictly internal. I faced this recently with one Sun and a couple
of HP rack mounted servers. No 5.25" inch bays at all. An external
scsi DVD writer would have been the obvious choice if they were
available. We went with USB. Even then we had to add adapters as none
of these machine had onboard USB.

Unless one has a spare PCI slot, an EIDE/UATA HA isn't an option.
Besides, the firmware on the EIDE/UATA HAs really only cover hard drives, and
those through a tweak of SCSI Manager 4.3, whereas the ACARD converters work
over any SCSI bus, motherboard or PCI, and do not depend upon a SCSI Manager
tweak.
Besides, the ACARD adapters can also allow EIDE CD and DVD drives to be
connected the SCSI bus, too.
Finally, the ACARD adapters have been upgraded to support 48-bit LBA, whereas
only the UATA/133 HAs have this capability (oh, and some so-called 100/133
HAs). |
