Adaptec 3210 RAID with internal and external hard drives |
|
|
Just spent some excess time trying to set up a two drive RAID array on my
new Dell PowerEdge 1600SC. I will be testing this setup for the next few
weeks before deploying it in my small office. I had two internal drives, and
one external drive. I kept getting a message stating that no RAID host
adapters or drives are available. Tried disabling the internal SCSI, moving
the 3210 to various slots, before finally moving the external drive to the
second channel. It worked perfectly that way. I had checked their
knowledgebase, installation manual, everything, and nowhere did it say that
the external drive must be on a different channel from the internal drive.
In any event, that's what solved the problem, though I have no idea why. |

Maybe it was an id conflict?
I did read somewhere about the "horrors" of connecting to the same channel
externally, and internally -- said, DO NOT do it as it'll cause problems. But I
noticed my Mylex 1164p's (which, btw, I just coaxed into 125MBytes/s with a RAID
0 3 array on each of 3 channels, spanned into a single logical drive :))
documentation does not seem to have a problem with the notion.

The ID's were ok, 0,1 and 2. I was trying to use two 36GB hard drives, on 0
and 2. ID #1 was taken up by a 73GB hard drive. My first impression was an
IRQ conflict. That's why I tried disabling the embedded Adaptec U320 host
adapter, but it turns out that had nothing to do with it. The onboard HA
doesn't have an external port (though I can run a cable from the internal
connector to the chassis, and use that one for any external components), but
then I wouldn't be able to use the externals for RAID. I've bought a few
Micronet external enclosures on Ebay over the past few months in preparation
for deployment of the new server. I'm basically a 'belt and suspenders' type
of guy when it comes to data integrity.
I'd probably move to an SATA RAID array, expect that I like the 15k SCSI
drives so much. They are VERY fast :) |
