Hello

Im trying to add another hd, to my 3 already.

AHa294AU

id 1 compaq
id 0 ibm
id 3 ibm

I set the 'new' to id 2 but when the machine starts up, it doesnt show id2
sitting nice along the others but id0 so getting rid of the other, doesnt
show in properties of 98SE but doesnt show along with all the others in
system info, but with no conflicts.

I went to fdsik but it says cant do the thing its suposed to do, prior to
formatting, sorry forget the terminology.

its a compaq 9.1 10000rpm wide ultra.

the jumper was set at start cmd so maybe a jumper thing?

Not been here for a while and not sure if anyone remebers i have dyslexia
hence not good with terminolgy

IS there a way to find out the power output on drives? i feed all my scsi
drives on the one machine from a seperate psu in a tower, my other drives
are x2 4.2 and 1x 9 and cant find the ratings. I dont think the others are
10000rpm

Also would this drive need cooling? i play around with scsi for fun, so its
a home setup.

thanks

Sorry i changed the jumper to make it id2 acc to the lable, and when that
didnt work i put it back in orig place

Btw is there a website to explain this and maybe help me learn more.

I picked up a pile of old compaq pro workstations, all came with scsi int
hd's, ext connetions too, dual proc machines. Im sorting them out as kids
educational machines, got rid of a couple already, 2im keeping for learning
linux.

Some came with extra scsi cards, huge pci cards, like 2 joined together
dated 97.

Would these bet better than the adadptec card?

I keep all my data on the scsi machine that covers my lan, when i go from
the int scsi to scsi on same pc its fast, but when i got from ide on A
machine to copy to the scsi on B machine it seems to take hours, that part
of the lan uses a 10mps hub. any software to see whats holding thigs up
etc?
thanks

Did a bit of googling, said the orig scsi drive should be the same, so i
rearranged so the orig 1st and last are the same, put jumper to id2 but on
booting up its coming up as ido and the same as my other 9gb (id 0) so
niether shows in 98

checked that with ctrl A in scsi bios thing

after looking at the online pdf of the drive it seems i misread the
connector, so wrong way around.

put the jumper on what i thought was id2 but in bios it says id 4 although
it sits along side the other 3

now the trouble is when i go into fdisk and try and set partition, it goes
to veryfying 0%, doesnt go up and gives a error message.

I cant give it, or format it.

does this mean the drive is fubar?

thanks

Jumpers for SCSI are being set as is best described here:

took a look, doesnt look the same. im not sure if the jumper should be
horizontally rather then vertical like it is now.

only 1 v v tiny jumper

although its now id4 and ok it seems i cant get the fdsik verify to make a
partition to work.

Do you mean the SCSI bios doesn't see it or 98SE doesn't see it? Where did

this new drive come from?

First, disconnect power from all your other drives and power up the machine.
Can you hear this new drive spin up? If not it might be DOA. The jumper
you describe generally means "spin up when power is applied" except on
Compaq drives where it means the opposite, so remove this jumper. I would
download something like Hitachi's "drive fitness test" from their website
which is a free test utility for scsi devices.

Dunno what the AHA294AU (I think you probably mean AHA-2940AU) has for bios
but if it's like the other Adaptec products I've used you can ctrl-<A> as
soon as you see the scsi info on your screen. Go into the scsi bios in this
manner and see if you can see the drive. If you cannot, it's likely DOA.
Power down, set a different SCSI ID on the drive and re-try. If you CAN see
it in the SCSI bios utility, try to low-level format it. There have been
previous posts about cheaply acquired AS-400 drives which have a different
sector size which precludes pretty much any other OS from recognizing them.
Fixable by low-level format.

Good luck.

Dave

Looks likes you missed the post where i got it working in the end, needed a
low format

Today i picked up 4 80 pin sca drives, looking for the adapters, seem
expensive. 80 to 68 pin with power connection.

the machines they are going in are ones i got for free and giving away as
kids edu machines so cant really ask them to pay, esp as they are like 8
year olds, i cant afford them either. anyone know where to get them v
cheap?
